great example of Democrats' media problem is that John Oliver's anti-tiktok-ban stance is seen here as more emblematic of the Dem party line than, like, the fact that the sitting Democratic President signed a law banning Tiktok (something Trump has wavered on)

just heard john oliver say that the tiktok ban is based in xenophobia and motivated by zuckerberg’s need for market share. he keeps repeating that “there’s no concrete evidence tiktok has been used nefariously by the ccp” democrats must declare epistemic bankruptcy right now

Unironically we need the White House to feud with John Oliver over this crap. He is super influential among young lefties and they will all believe whatever he is unless presented with an opposing perspective. Plus the feud would make it clear what Democrats actually believe.
An element of the Democratic left has been nurtured on histrionics for 15 years. It's like a drug. And they are addicts.
It’s awesome how the perception of the Democratic Party is based on their media surrogates and never on their actual policies or platform
I watched the episode, people are misrepresenting it. He doesn’t take a strong stance for or against the ban. He basically says that it’s a nuanced issue and many of the decision makers on both sides have questionable incentives, so to take all of it with a grain of salt.
the more you look the worse it gets tbh. the reason i think this "dems need to shank the activists" stuff is pointless is it presupposes single issue anti-woke voters are even available to be persuaded & that their concerns are limited to matters democrats can actually control.
Lol honestly that tiktok ban and Trumps pledge to not ban it played a non insignificant role in shifting the youth vote
I'd bet the messaging issues inside and outside the party have a similar root cause too, like too-online zillenials having way too much control over messaging/communictions
100% D’s do it too to a lesser degree, but it’s incredible how ferociously R’s will take any bad take from a liberal/progressive leaning public figure and pronounce it as the new defining principle of the Democratic Party as a whole…
Can't force the media to fact check or provide context anymore is probably the biggest issues Pathological liars get out on the same level as normal people by the media
Seems like this part of the analysis is out of order. The Dems have no intergenerational plan. We are not good at this. GOP is disciplined. We're just fighting to be the leader of losers.
Problem is it is based in xenophobia and motivated by billionaire protectionism. John Oliver doesn’t represent the Dem party line, but they’d be a lot cooler if he did.
They banned it because the kids here were getting too sympathetic for the kids Israel is killing over there. That's it. Everything else is a bullshit excuse to make that stop.
I mean, you're actively talking on the platform that's pretty definitively the most notable threat to democracy among the social media platforms.
TikTok ban is an unpopular attack on 1st amendment rights democrats are lucky if anyone thinks they’re not responsible for it
"China is evil because they censor the internet, we must halt their sinister influence by censoring the internet" Everything the US does to try to contain China is so mind boggling stupid, can't believe we're doing a dumber Cold War we'll probably end up losing this time
Sounds like the Democrats should stop having such insane policies and listen to what their supporters want
I disagree. What percentage of Democrats support the ban? I personally do, but I've literally never met another person who does. Liberals have eaten up the CCP's propaganda via TikTok, and I really don't think it's unfair or unbalanced to say so.
this is a great point. my guess is that the public knows that the most visible and or outspoken Dem party voters (college educated middle class professionals) are more in line with/listen more to Jon Oliver than Biden etc
The root cause is that liberals have intellectual honesty and are constantly critical of Democrats. It's a virtue, but terrible for campaign messaging.
You don’t think it was the letter to America by bin Laden poetry reading? Imagine if left wing media covered tik tok like Charlottesville. We would never see the end of Dems reading terror poetry next to AOC and that rabid cunt talib . Gotta say it’s deeper than maddow/oliver
There's a strain of Western progressives who out of either naivety or quiet malice basically ignore global politics unless they can use it to call America bad somehow
And that's a great reason to vote for Trump. The Democrats want to ban social media platforms which don't push the far-left agenda. Meanwhile, Trump supports free speech.
