When Alcoa owner Andrew Mellon was Treasury Secretary, he made sure Alcoa was protected from Smoot Hawley duties on aluminum imports from its Canadian plants. I wonder if Trump has a carve out for imported Trumpy Bears and MAGA hats.

Pity the US doesn't have Canada's smarts to harness the power of moving water to generate low-carbon hydroelectricity and use some of it to enable low-cost aluminum production. Not really. No pity for the US. They brought it all on themselves.

Aluminum uses a huge amount of electricity - something the US does not have lots of excess capacity for. Aluminum production has moved to places where electricity is cheap - Iceland, for instance, has a few large smelters despite no bauxite and tiny domestic requirements.

I don't see the on-shoring potential here, except perhaps for Alcoa, and only if it already had plans to modernize a US facility. Pretty lame stuff. Trump doesn't have the nerve to walk back the aluminum tariff. It would look too much like a defeat

We had an aluminum plant in Missouri that produced a fifth of US product shut down a couple of years ago because modernization and electricity was too expensive. Our governor vetoed a bill that would have saved the plant. There are efforts now to reopen. We’ll see.

As a US manufacturer, I had to move production of aluminum parts overseas because the price of aluminum is out of control in the US and the supply is chaotic at best. Absolute disaster.

Yeah, the US can not increase aluminum production by any substantial amount because even a single aluminum smelter requires 600 megawatts of electrical power. Until we get some more nuclear power online or restart coal plants, we do not have sufficient power.

Wait until Americans find out that they aren't actually energy independent. US gets 63% of it's crude oil from Canada at a reduced price of about 15%, shame if that discount came off. To the "well, we don't need your filthy crude", yes, yes you do.
