The FCC chairman appointed by Trump publicly threatened ABC, saying "we can do this the easy way or the hard way," and then within hours ABC complied with the threat by the Trump Administration. So if the "average American" believes that is what happened, they would be correct

the story is too enormous now. the average american will come to believe, if they do not already, that donald trump ordered jimmy kimmel off the air. and this didn't happen. x.com/chrislhayes/st…

Also, the day before, Trump himself accused ABC of promulgating "hate speech," and bragged that he had successfully extracted a $15 million settlement from their parent company (straight into his personal coffers) because they had so meanly targeted him with "hate speech"
Also, a few weeks ago, Trump threatened that he might have to prosecute one of his political critics, because he was mad that this person, an ABC News contributor, had criticized him on the ABC "Sunday Show" that morning
Precedent does, in fact, matter. USSC effectively said the below was ok. I disagree that it’s ok, but it’s the precedent

Kimmel violated FCC regulations when he lied about Kirk's assassin being MAGA, the FCC threatening action if the network didn't do it first is completely warranted.

Exactly. The other option is that the raging libtards at ABC just one day decided that they're MAGA bros that are grieving Charlie too hard for a fairly tame joke

So the only connection you have between those two things is that they each happened within hours of each other? ABC had no other motive such as declining ratings, massive financial losses, distaste?
This is how most regulatory agencies work. They allow the industries to self-regulate (the easy way).Carr said multiple times in Benny show his agency may be asked to step in and judge this situation (the hard way), and it very likely would have gotten there given public outcry
From what I’ve seen/heard from Trump at various public appearances so far, Trump WANTS the credit, even if there is zero evidence he had any influence in the decision of having Kimmel fired. Which of course he does, he can’t help himself.

Don’t be surprised if Trump says, “thanks to me”, in one of these pressers. If Trump’s advisors were smart (or had any control over Trump), they’d tell him to distance himself from this situation. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I'm not saying it would be wrong if that were true--Jimmy Kimmel's statement probably violated FCC rules for licensees--but this is just the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. There are other possible reasons, such as angry calls and emails and affiliates dropping Kimmel.

Link Lauren is spot on here with his analysis of the Jimmy Kimmel suspension. #linklauren #JimmyKimmel
Kimmel would have gotten the boot without the FCC action; he was already on the way out and bit the hand that fed him, too many station owners are MAGA-aligned to let a baseless smear against MAGA go. That said, the Trump/FCC action was criminal.
If Trump had indicated that he didn't want it to happen, it wouldn't have. He may not have directly told the FCC guy, but he's publicly made his wishes very clear. He wants "inaccuracy" punished - and has a very specific definition.
I think you're playing the wrong game here by getting drawn into a causality argument. The Carr threat is the 1A violation regardless of whether Kimmel's faced any consequences
Disney could just move Kimmels show to Disney plus if they wanted to. The FCC has no say on what apps do. His contract is up next year and Disney probably isn't going to resign him. Cable TV is rapidly dying. It won't exist in a few years. ABC Disney is tired of Kimmel.
I don’t understand why we’re pretending that broadcast networks operate under the protections of “free speech.” If you say “fuck” on a broadcast network the network will be fined and you’ll likely be fired
It would be nice if there was no FCC. The admin couldn’t use a veiled threat and the corporation couldn’t behind those threats.
