This little thread gives us a clearer sense of what’s going on — hawks want the US to invest in defending Greenland but they know Trump hates the idea of America helping foreign countries (Ukraine, Korea, etc), so they’re framing it for him as us doing colonialism.

President @realDonaldTrump is 100% right again - #Greenland is critical to the defense of the USA. We love the Danes but a couple of additional drones, dogsled teams & inspection ships are not enough to defend Greenland against the Russians & Chinese Communists. 1/2

Yeah, this is basically how one Danish defense expert understands the situation.

This Danish defense expert thinks Trump is just trying to get Denmark to increase the militarization of the island to deter China and Russia.

I've seen people talk about how much more prosperous both countries would be if Canada became the 51st state. Are they inadvertently laying the groundwork for supporting NAFTA again?
Stunning how we’ve managed to defend ourselves without colonizing Greenland for 200+ years. Also, NATO. It’s precisely why it exists. Stunning how all these American 1st, build a physical, economic, cultural wall and ignore the rest of the world MAGA’s are now Imperialists
Ok but Denmark is not gonna spend the money and Trump isn’t gonna give it to them so they’re gonna back themselves into a corner to actually do the colonialism
is saying if...If they don't beef it up, then we absolutely should step in. The world is more dangerous than anytime in history right now because China is essentially colonizing here in the western hemisphere. Thank God won as he is a realist

What is the argument for us helping any country defend itself? What are the practical historical cases that don't involve excessive free-riding, local defense capability under-investment, and anti-American sentiment and blowback in the regions we are allegedly trying to protect?
The fact that everyone in the Republican party simply accepts what a clown show they've made out of the US boggles the mind
