Can disconnect the wire between the wings and have the two planes fly back to base when you need to ah …. deliver the emergency supplies … on top of the people … that need them.
Maybe they’re all looking at the design wrong. It’s not the drone that needs to fly, it’s the payload that does…..
Aka stick the payload in a trebuchet and let it do the heavy lifting. Use the drone to guide and land the payload
There is a technique that kind of looks like this, but it uses a single plane an a really long rope to have someone/something land in a central spot without all the helicopter downwash. https://patents.google.com/patent/US3724817A/en…
It's my favorite. Wonder what the software looks like. Do the planes need to do a flapping thing like a helicopter? Is it tricky to coordinate them or does the physics force it? Do the gyros get confused by so much spinning?
It won't be easy for the pilots of these planes—they’re going to get nauseous! P.S. But if you replaced the cable with a rigid tow bar and imagined four planes, you’d actually have a very interesting solution: fly there quickly, hook up, lift and reposition the load then unhook.
How many flying devices of old were just waiting for a meta materials revolution with lightweight frames and lithium batteries?
I imagine many.
Funny sight, either way!
