Property tax cuts are politically popular. But they are NOT PRO FAMILY. : "There is no reason to give senior citizens, whose homes are paid off & whose incomes are subsidized by working parents through Social Security & Medicare, special property tax breaks while expecting parents to foot the entire bill."

Do you think FEMA paying luxury New York Hotels $59 million to house illegal immigrants is a good use of taxpayer funds meant for emergencies and natural disasters?

Important and under-discussed argument: "Bad property tax policies are paying this grandma to live far away from her grandkids." However, gets messy as it harkens to assertion that affordable senior housing helps parents by way of affording grandparents to live nearby.
wow this is cringe. Grandparents homes are anchors and if they get forced to sell because their fixed income is not enough to cover their inflation bubbled assessment it tears up roots that are important for families.
Something too that but OTOH younger families will have federal tax deductions for dependents and child tax credits in many cases.
well, parents are the ones with children in school. Why should seniors pay for schools? And sorry, my SS may be subsidized by working parents but I sure as hell contributed to it through MY working life.
You obviously don't have parents who are struggling to keep their home because of property taxes, which increase yearly. Forcing seniors to basically pay "rent" on land they own, after decades of paying taxes, is absolutely antifamily. Our elderly are our family members, too.
That’s a very different picture of the elderly from the one painted by the pro-social security advocates. So, your elderly gramma who uses a walker is a leach on young families? I suggest you work on this a bit. There’s a case to be made, but this is not it.
Property Taxes should not exist. It is a Tax on something you have already purchased and if you cannot afford the Tax..Your home is taken. Find another way to pay for Schooling.
Land value tax and, if not, let's get some split rolls. Though, it is funny to me that seniors with huge amounts of equity, large homes & retirement payments get property tax discounts while families pay full freight.
I suppose it depends on how you define a tax cut. I think most seniors would be happy to have their property tax remain the same as opposed to rising dramatically from one year to the next. The consequence of these massive tax increases are that some seniors will be forced out.
How would you structure the policy to not be hugely harmful to seniors? Obviously appeals to patriotism will be part of it, but that only goes so far with some people.
If it means less funding for public schools then they are extremely pro family. Anything to harm the public schools system that teaches abortion on demand and to use contraception is by definition pro family. Attack them directly don’t have minor policy proposals
If you don't cut property taxes for seniors who are eligible for cuts, then the cost of their care falls more on their children.
Not going to die on that hill, but O65 property tax breaks help the family bc 1) reduce burden of elderly parents on working kids 2) equip them to pass on wealth (house and savings) 3) allow elderly to care for children 4) anchor families in neighborhoods creating stability.
THANK YOU My parents are extremely entitled and do not deserve this on top of their $300 mortgage payment and $12,000 a month of public pensions.
While the average American doesn’t process it, making retirement cheaper will take stress off many American families

My parents tax in Kansas: $1200. Same property tax in Chicago suburbs: $11,200. The tax is subsidizing pensions that are underfunded because people are living longer then expected.

It’s impossible to rebuild a high-trust society if this is how we treat people who actually need the assistance of said society and are willing to go on a limb to trust that people will do the right thing. This is insane. Let the man free and give him a damn job.
