America's strongest Asian ally—a country whose constitution we wrote, whose military we control, and whose islands we have occupied with 55,000 troops & huge naval bases for 80 years—is a national security threat because they want to invest too much in saving our steel mills

The newly dominant anti-trade people start their arguments with securing core US warfighting industries against the CCP
...and then ten seconds later they pivot to attacking Canadian lumber, EU/NATO agriculture, Korean cars, & Japanese FDI

It's one thing to ensure economic resilience from China, our biggest geopolitical rival. It's another to build an economic moat around the US that excludes even our closest allies for no strategic reason.

President Biden claiming Japan's investment in an American steel company is a threat to national security is a pathetic and craven cave to special interests that will make America less prosperous and safe. I'm sorry to see him betraying our allies while abusing the law.
Absolutely delusional takes. The concern isn't that Nippon Steel will maliciously sabotage US Steel, the concern is that they'll cut production to maximize profits, thus leaving the United States more reliant on imports.
"Anti-profit" is an argument for nationalization, not for blocking one subsidiary Delaware corp from buying another Delaware corp.
Regardless, Nippon Steel's global competitiveness suggests their management & operating practices bode well for US Steel
This decision really does look like a mistake - time will tell, but it does not look good at the moment.
Next thing we know, they've run off with the hearths & rolling presses in the night!

There seemed no better technology partner / investor / parent company - in the world. Even combined, they'd be under 1/2 the scale of China's largest steel group.
If not them...

Is plant closure a better outcome for the workers than upgrading the plant ? I think not! Not exactly like the steel plant would be moved offshore.

Academia type response. Think like a business owner and supply chain dependency.
Every American company should be sold to foreigners in order to save them.
Americans are too dumb to save themselves.
Which one of our allies is mostly responsible for the collapse of US Steel?
That country produced cheap inferior steel and dumped it on the market with the expressed intent to bankrupt US Steel.
Other reasons, real or imaginary, could be cited. Not a threat to national security.
Japan isn’t the national security threat. Japan’s neighbor is the national security threat.
This because "ally" is just the American, PC word for "vassal". You are right, but good luck. :/
They’re not “investing” anything. They wanted to buy the company from its current shareholders. The money from that transaction would not have gone to the company, it would’ve gone to its shareholders.
How’s British Steel doing after being sold out?
I’ll spoil it. It was a disaster. So much so the British govt might have to renationalise it.
Doesn't diss Japan....just means that something essential to US security should probably be controlled by US interests and completely subject to US law. I am going to trust POTUS on this one..the fact you refer to "saving our steel mills" demonstrates that something is askew in
Not a single World War II veteran would agree with your delusional take.
Maybe we shouldn't do that and focus on America. Yearly spending on all those troops is enough to buy a steel mill every year
Eh...
I can see your point, but I also remember Japanese automotive and electronics companies basically hollowing out American manufacturing not that long ago.
They also attacked us too dip shit. How bout we leave critical industries in the hands of America?
America first! You are not a patriot if you want Japan to control our steel.
Another embarrassing example of how democrats fail to resist the influence of unions and jeopardize America’s future. So stupid. We already lost the elections all we needed to do was precisely nothing on the Japanese rescuing our industries
This is only happening because the name of the company is U.S. Steel. There would be no pushback over Anacott Steel.
