I might have expected some schadenfreude seeing all the big tech and finance people who backed Trump squirming and panicking and bargaining and pleading, but watching it happen I find myself more worried than anything.

To state the obvious, it does not help our country’s and our president’s negotiating position to be trying to strike deals while our market is collapsing. Whoever is recommending that idea to President @realDonaldTrump should be fired now.

Ok, now I feel schadenfreude. "My bad"? That's it?

I have no anger toward Dems. Just disappointment. I don’t think this was foreseeable. I assumed economic rationality would be paramount. My bad.
Choosing a repeat of Trump's first term over Harris was, I think, a defensible choice, even if it wasn't mine. It's now clear that that was never on the table, but I'm inclined to give a pass to people who initially supported him and don't support what he's doing now.
Schadenfreude would presume the alternative was better policy. You think Ackman is thinking to himself, "wish I'd avoided the uncertainty of tariffs by getting taxed on unrealized gains"? - not for a second.
we had a pretty solid preview of the alternative in the man Harris pledged to imitate taxing unrealized gains was a terrible idea that was unlikely to pass given Dem party dynamics, and the economy was pretty healthy under the Dems compares favorably to crashing markets
You’re worried about a levered billionaire whose portfolio is being gutted by the day?
Actually, watching them fold has been very reassuring. Much better than when they were playing along. Congress can stop all of this, and several Rs have already flirted with doing so. If enough of the base folds, Congress will turn on him. They don't WANT to be Trump's bitch,
In 08, we attempted to perform the most inwardly-aimed market destruction possible and it still managed to wipe out world markets. It's not guaranteed that we're losing relative global position with this one.
Is it? Trump has done many bad things. I think it's good that the same thing that made him kill African babies with AIDS and appoint an antivaxxer to head the HHS has also made him do something with immediate, obvious, negative consequences to Americans.
Honestly I think the emotion I feel most strongly is relief. It's like, a lot of these people have (had) demonstrated an essentially infinite capacity to go along with the idiotic partisan idea of the month, so it makes me feel better to know that *a limit* exists somewhere
If this happened without COVID happening I might be more hopeful but I don't think people are in the right head space to weather another really bad global event. Especially not MAGA.
I'm actually astounded by the tech right. All that talk and bravado of being truth seekers and courageous. And for what? 💀
The downstream effects don't just hit them. Whole lotta innocent folks going to suffer. And on a personal note, as a parent, I don't like the America we're building for my kids. Or anybody's
I see growing panic from people that do industry things, but increasing support from what one could call their base because they think it'll only hit the elite. I fear not only their reactions now. I fear the dread itself. It feels like someone has taken out flight stick.
I am wondering if the Securities Exchange Commission has enough data to determine if administration insiders were shorting en masse before the tariff announcements.
worry is the correct sentiment when they are not the only people to pay for their stupidity. If this were just going to hurt Trumpsters, I'd consider it just desserts for voting in a maniac. This is going to negatively impact most Americans and billions outside our country.
I’m reminded of Solomon. In 2016 Dems said “fine, she can keep it, just please don’t cut my baby in half” and Trump accepted that. now his response is “we don’t care who the mother is, we want to kill the baby.” And people refused to believe him no matter how much he said it.
I backed the conservative side to take down out to lunch dems, punish corrupt universities and to crush trans 4 hams. I don't think those considerations were wrong last November. they are still valid now.
tbf Bill backed Dean Phillips against Biden back in January last year. it's not like Trump was his first option.
Honestly, I think the business tycoons are underselling the catastrophe because they are not going to suffer as much as small- and medium-sized import businesses. Either Trump caves or there is a wave of bankruptcies and pink slips this month.
