The Gaetz nomination is so off-the-wall that I half believe he's sacrificial so Senate R's will gave an easier time confirming all the other questionable picks, having shown their independence by icing Gaetz.

To be clear, the likelier, scarier, explanation is Trump is so insistent on this that no one could talk him out of it.
I think you may be onto something here. But as for the other appointments, starting January 22, Americans will be able to see Russia from the window of the White House!
Obviously wrong if you've been paying attention, Hegseth is the sacrifice. We have two months and change until confirmations, Hegseth continues to look worse during that time, Gaetz continues to look better.
That was my initial thought as well – he’s putting him out there as a guaranteed loss to give them a chance to sacrifice at least one of us picks, rather than one he really wants.
I don't think the Senate is going to just give in on the Secretary of Defense.
Another explanation is that it gets a trouble maker out of the House making the very narrow Republican majority work much smoother
Political class continues to not get it. To everyday Americans there is nothing remotely off the wall about putting a former attorney and reform-driven congressman in charge of a justice department that needs reform.
Wow, how'd this insightful tweet pop into my feed from someone I've always disagreed with?! Not bad amigo!
Can't be any worse than Merrick Garland, who appointed lawfare specialist Jack Smith. Yeah I think Gaetz is perfect for the position.
Or how about when Trump said he will seek retribution for all his legal woes. Maybe we should believe him.
It's funny that you believe that a Republican controlled Senate is going to deny Trump any of his picks. All of them will be confirmed.
Trump needs a loyalist above all else at DOJ. I just thought he’d appoint someone that could provide that with less baggage.
Oh, Honey, just say it: A bunch of your buddies are retaining personal attorneys and trying to figure out the countries that don't have an extradition treaty with the US. It's OK to say that you pooped your pants. I know you know what's coming.
"The Gaetz nomination is so off-the-wall" . . . Dems promising to crimp free speech, end the filibuster, undermine the judiciary, then grant amnesty to plunge us into a fascist state was off the wall. An appointment that you are unhappy w is a walk in the park compared to what

Gates is a Harriet Miers pick. A sacrificial lamb. They know Gaetz cannot get the votes. The next guy will be a someone with a small profile, the paper qualifications and most importantly totally loyal to Trump. The Senate will not have the juice to stop him b/c they stopped Gaetz
No Every one of these motherfuckers is auditioning to see if they are worthy of being reelected next time. Pass the entire fucking slate or the fucking consequences.
Was thinking the same thing. I assume Murkowski and Collins are “No”s. There are 5 or 6 super safe R’s that will be at the beginning of 6 year terms that can also vote “No”. I mean, would anyone primary Barasso or Blackburn in 6 years over a “No” on Gaetz?
Lol. Graham’s already saying he’s fine with it. Why haven’t ppl realized by now that there is nothing that will cause these Senators to discover their courage. They overlooked a coup, for the love.
I think/hope that’s what most of these initial appointments are. “Here. I’m made good on owing you a favor but the senate shot it down.”
Senate Rs don’t actually care about showing their independence. He’ll get through.
Are you assuming that the Senate will actually hold hearings as opposed to Trump's demand that all his picks will be recess appointments?
