I genuinely wonder how much of Putin's motivation is a desperate attempt to boost demographics by adding to "Greater Russia's" population through annexation. I've read he's obsessed with demographics This is just pure tragic irony if that was a big motivation for taking Ukraine

They have been fudging their stats for almost two decades now. But yes, one needs to look at any random towns war memorials - like there'll be like 5 Afghanistan deaths, 1 Chechnya deaths, and then 90 "SMO" dead chiseled on the stone.
