US tax audits are very effective revenue-raisers because they lead people who were audited to actually follow the tax laws in the future.

Fascinating! I wonder how this extra spending would compare to social norm nudges when it comes to tax avoidance/evasion? Is it the same 'type of people' above the 90th percentile that are affected?
I just got hit with a 6k fine bc my taxes were wrong from 2022 Why were my books were wrong? - My CPA was negligent 😠 (I'll post full details below, but if you want the full audit Follow me + bookmark this post and comment "Books").
it feels misleading to say “x audit dollars spent yields y in additional revenue” as if that’s a law of nature. Historically true, sure, but a lower budget forces IRS to focus on egregious cases, increasing yields. May be diminishing returns if we were to pump the IRS budget.
