This is a terrific column from Noah Smith. The key graph and observation: "It’s a pretty good bet that Republicans will suddenly “discover” that inflation in America is actually low now, and give Trump the credit."

That's almost a certainty.
The Dems delivered substantial economic improvement -- lower unemployment, faster growth, a significantly higher stock market -- but didn't get credit.
And even the inflation concern was exaggerated, as few took the time to look at the other

I would love to see that plot with an added comparison to how well the us economy was actually going. Could be some weighted combination of unemployment and inflation, or maybe just a derivative of GDP?

i wanna see this chart, but from people who didn't vote in any of the past 3-4 elections
One thing that Biden's administration did well was bringing back the semiconductor industry to US soil, I'll give them that.
This is silly. Inflation is like stacking papers. Just because you're adding fewer pieces of paper to the pile more slowly, the pile doesn't get smaller.
Try getting out of your narrow cast news universe. Stop paying to be lied to
Unfortunately, the key takeaway the Democratic Party will grasp is that “the American public is stupid” instead of “we really suck at communicating “.
The problem with this is both parties take credit for things when they should not and skirt blame for things, also when they should not. Its all political spin.
By the way, if they can keep it low (some indications this may not be so easy given their fiscal plans), they are welcome to keep some of the credit!
It was obvious to me that this was what they would do, because Trump never offered any alternative policy that he would do different from Biden outside of simply increasing tariffs.
Um yeah.
Just like he did in 2017
Old news.
Until he tanks it. Then MAYBE the Dems will be allowed a full throttle chance to prove that the most popular policies they DO represent can be enacted without Christmas ending etc.
Yep. Those claiming it was a poor economy on October 15, 2024 will be claiming it’s a great day economy on February 15, 2025.

Sure they will
Fox news is going to tell them that
Btw - What day is my grocery bill going back to 2020 levels? I want to make sure I have it on my calendar
Also, of interest, is how the News Media will shift its coverage of the Economy.
Seems to me that the Dems’ opinion tracks reality more closely. Just look at the Rs opinions during the crash.
Look forward to the response when next year’s 3rd quarter inflation comps to this year’s…it won’t be lower..
The swing from 100% to 0% by republicans is wild. Meanwhile dems keeps swimming around 50%.
No shit.
They did it in 2017, too.
What Americans remember as Trump's great economy was the one he inherited from Obama.
The graph suggests that Republicans don’t react to the economy good or bad; they have a moronic, binary response to party.
Can we henceforth stop doing surveys of "how do you feel about the economy" ?
Just revert to asking them "do you support the administration's party" ?
There doesn't seem to be much signal in the question/answer.
A second Trump presidency could bring about massive change, including tariffs, mass deportations and a rollback of climate rules.
Here’s what happens next and what changes Trump could make during his next term.
He will also claim credit for ending the “practice “ of kids getting trans surgery at schools. Trump is a pathological liar but one thing you can count on from him is to take credit for everything and blame others for anything that turns out bad
I assume "pretty good bet" is downlow sarcasm. If there is any confusion about the role conservative media plays in society generally and politics specifically, I think we need look no further in the quest to discover how and why Harris lost.
There are lots of dumb democrats as proven by this, but this is just such a damning graph for Republicans. Uniformly stupid and living in their own information bubble. How do democrats pierce this???
This is an absolutely damning graph. It says that our party affiliation totally filters our perspective on the economy, apparently regardless of the actual performance of the economy.
We run ion flocks of red and blue sheep. Either way we are all sheep.
That will not last once Trump starts implementing his policies, but also the world is on a trajectory towards a global conflict. Biden never should've tried to be a 2 term president, economy should've dominated democrats campaign but also the future needed tangible fixes.
Inflation is still 2.5-3%
Democrats created a bubble for themselves thinking the economy is good. It isn't
Inflation is still working its economic & social destruction thru the economy. Stupidity in govt has that type of effect
This just shows how out of touch Noah and the other liberal pundits still are with everyday folks
This was a LANDSLIDE for Trump and the GOP
Another example of why it's the information environment.
"The problem wasn't Democratic policy or messaging. It's ignorance."
