All it took was engineering a technology that allowed everyone to stay in their rooms and not ever go out...along with medicinal drugs that leveled people out and reduced their appetite for risk. 👍

People stop reporting crimes because it is a waste of time. Part of the sinister intent of bail reform.

Actually there was a modest increase in the rate of homicide (victims) between 2007 and 2022, in the age range 15-34. The drop was recent.

That's the cause, but it was the 1990s crime drop. The decline is a combination of covid era reductions in intake and the perpetrators of pre-1990s crime aging out/dying. It's been pretty steady except the covid shock in recent years.

It is sure easier to reduce incarceration when violent crime is down. With 1993 murder rates, and the associated mayhem, you'd get a prison-building book faster than you can say Pete Wilson. But all can be happy with the virtuous trends.

Ehhhhh it’s likely underreported. But the issue to me is both will go back up I think if we don’t keep taking the violent types out of society

You'd almost think there's a causal relationship between violent crime rates and imprisonment rates.

The median age in the USA was approximately 36.5 years in 2007, rising to 38.9 years in 2022. So not much of a change here.
