This is another piece of evidence of how societal and economic burden of COVID, flu and other infections can be substantially reduced ❤️‍🩹💰😊. We must reject the narrative of these as an inevitable part of life. Let's clean the air, like we once learned to clean the water 💪.
Plus a much larger set of controls. One can get robust results with a clever and well controlled study design even if the sample size is not huge. The team is very competent. Looking forward to the paper; now they just put out a press release.
Is it possible that getting sick as a child also has benefits in building an immune system early on? How do we measure the risk/benefit of stressing the immune system?
So simple. Love it. I'm honestly curious does this have any long term health effect? Eg. kids immune system not prepared enough when going into other areas. Where they just get sick. Or long term premature death because of not enough pathogen exposure.
These findings are a powerful reminder of the impact that clean air can have on public health, especially for our youngest and most vulnerable. Reducing illness with simple air quality measures isn't just possible—it's necessary. Let’s advocate for healthier environments in all

Or they could hire proper cleaners to clean the place everyday. In Sweden kids are left to dribble and drool everywhere and places are not cleaned daily.
Kids need to get sick. Rates of eczema (allergy to house dust) are much higher in Japan than the west because parents sanitize everything there.
Then what does this tell us? The poison to the body must be in the room. Does it come from the router, carpet, paint, poor air quality air? It definitely is not from mythical infections.
Why are there Africans in Europe? That African child is going to grow up and become politically involved in a far left political party that is anti European and fundamentally wants Europeans dead and gone.
Imagine if there were more air purifiers in use and Far-UVC lights on the ceiling? Sickness would decrease even more significantly and savings would come as absenteeism decreases and functional capacity improves.
Seems they used at least Lifa Air purifier. ~600€ a pop. According to Google, there are a total of 3,617 kindergarten-style establishments in mainland Finland. Huge benefits start from day one, with a lousy few million investment. let's get this done.
I wonder how much of that was reduction of airborne pathogens, and how much that there happened to be mold damage on those day cares. Continued exposure to mold spores does decrease immune response to respiratory illnesses.
This makes perfect sense. Sadly most children's care centers in the US are private and it is much more difficult to force them to upgrade air filtration systems .
My first impulse is that this might somehow be bad for their immune system down the line. Cleaner kids develop more allergies. Do they talk about that? :)
My health has improved within hours of taking delivery of my first domestic air filter. They're a must!
Alas, no AR-15 pin wearing Republican lowlife will ever give a damn about the life or health of American children.
Private schools might deploy these. No hope in public sector even though Finland has highest taxes among European countries.
I am curious about the use of air purifiers. Positives - They don't involve downsides present in other measures They might also reduce exposure to VOC from building material outgassing in buildings, thus reducing headaches and increasing academic performance.
But I am also skeptical of air purifiers in schools because: 1) Some viral challenge studies don't seem to find a clear dose-response relationship, at least not linear. 2) Many benign viruses may have protective effects through cross-immunity. Is reducing them a net harm?
It implies nothing unless you give us the raw figures. How many illnesses before and after purifiers. If there were 6 illnesses before and 5 after, that's not much of a drop.
But doesn't it also reduce the child's natural ability to fight disease? Maybe they should spend more time outside.
All these kids are gonna have shitty immune systems and will be frequently sick when they grow up to be adults. Kids need infections for their immune systems to mature. SMH.
I don't like it. This creates squishy weak immune systems long term for the children. Our immune systems need target practice.

Telling a parent they can't bring a HEPA filter into their kid's class due to "equity" - it's unfair bc other classes don't have them - is like saying "No you can't put a seatbelt on your kid to protect them, because none of the other kids are wearing a seatbelts"
