I keep thinking about this exchange. Blakeman says he's "created wealth" because of the skyrocketing home prices in Nassau County. The idea that young families are priced out just doesn't occur at all

crazy moment in the NY governor debate: Hochul says she wishes she pushed even harder on YIMBY policies, meanwhile, Blakeman literally *brags* about how his NIMBY policies have made housing so expensive

It’s so cool how Long Island NIMBYs will be like “my home value just went up 60%? That is wealth that I rightfully earned! you want to make it easier for the market to build more housing? that’s charity.”

Dumbass. She wanted to put low income housing in our beautiful Nassau County. The people stuck together under Blakeman’s leadership and stopped the socialist idiot. You’re such a moron. You have no clue what YOU are talking about. My $500,000 house in now worth $800,000.
I made some money by buying a condo in 2016 and selling it this year to fund our mortgage, but that's the point - I used the equity to buy a new home! The dream isn't being in the same one forever as number go up.

A real trader passed their Studio evaluation in under three minutes. Less than two minutes later, they requested a payout. That's My Funded Studio. Static drawdown. No consistency rule. No waiting period for eligible payout requests. Watch the actual trader replay.

Blue state republicans (CA, NY, RI, MA, CT) being the most anti housing politicos in the country is so strange to me.
Long Island is largely populated largely by people who grew up working class in the city and advanced to the upper middle class in the 1990s boom and now don't see a reason why their kids and grandkids can't do the same except they're lazy or whatever, and they think every
I dont like him I live on Long Island The only way he created wealth was through a bad assessment system such that a person can borrow more equity. This is not creating wealth
Whats he supposed to do? Theres very little room for SFHs in Nassau. Houses are already built 5 feet apart from their neighbors. What little remains could be multifamily but his voters dont want that and neither do young families.
It's starting to self correct. The number of sellers far outpacing the number of buyers. Home prices are dropping. Expect this to increase.

U.S. homebuyer demand just hit a record low, per Redfin. There were just 929,000 buyers in September, versus 1.51 million sellers, a gap of about 580,000. A record 41 of the 50 largest U.S. metros are now buyer’s markets, led by Miami, Nashville and Houston.
the blankman position is a very bad way frame of thinking about housing. super zero sum and ill-informed. we want things to be cheaper not more expensive.

"home owners necessarily benefit when housing prices go up" is a common misconception, but there's nuance and it's mostly wrong. starting with the case where it's true: if i own a home in one market and that market sees a big increase in cost of housing and i want to move to a x.com/BulwarkOnline/…
don’t think nassau county cares. those folks would prefer to sell their house to their kids for a dollar and move to florida.
The equity only shows up for the people who already own. Everyone trying to buy now is looking at a payment that usually doesn’t work at 7.4% on those same prices.
This is a core tenet of the NIMBYs’ gospel, albeit one they usually try to avoid openly bragging about.
I'm in my 50s and feel this is boomer brain warp. Even if you think that don't say it. You're not running for country club president.
It's genuinely bizzare. Imagine a politician bragging about this for any other good or service: "I made doctors in my county rich by only allowing ten new doctors to be licensed each year!" "I created so much wealth for restaurants by banning residential kitchens!"
And increased home value only matters if you move to a cheaper area or die. Meanwhile your assessment and insurance go up to cover the increased value.
I think it does occur, but to fiscal conservatism, harm done to poor people is an object, positive, normative good.
I have seen this far too often enough to believe that it's not that it doesn't occur to him, it's just much more of a feature than a bug. It's a boomer win-win, more homeowner value + barrier to entry high enough to keep out the "undesirables".
It sounds wild but LI really thinks this way There’s a whole market for reassessments to maximize property value. And a scandalous investigation a few years ago revealed LI realtors collude to stop POC buying in rich neighborhoods to prevent white flight affecting home prices
I mean. He is not wrong. You pursue policies that raise home prices, it’s good for the people that have homes. He is just forgetting about everybody else.
What’s crazy is someone who owns a $600k house is, by definition, rich. So he’s really bragging about making rich people richer.
The homeowner doesn't care who's buying the home. So if your home goes up $300,000, that's a good thing as a homeowner.
Move somewhere more affordable. That’s how most people got to Nassau County in the first place. Better cost of living, better quality of life. That still exists in other regions of NY and the country. Change isn’t always negative.
The assessments on those houses then help raise property taxes but whatever.....
You need to understand the group he is trying to reach out and speak to. Doesn’t include young families.
That's the catch 22, everyone who purchases a home always wants the value to go up including the young people aspiring to become home owners, its a way of building wealth.
It’s so funny. In LI, all the people chasing ICE down the streets are the same ones who tie themselves to blighted one story buildings to prevent affordable housing from going up.
Democratic governors have been so unimpressive in New York for the last few decades that the right kind of Republican candidate might actually win--but all we get are MAGA fruitcakes.
Its a fascinating cheat though ahaha... obviously the prices of your houses go up if theres less supply
Flipside: low home prices in the contemporary economy are associated with poor living conditions (crime, climate, congestion, pollution) or a moribund economy Very few pols want to take credit for that
David, if you own a home, you want your elected representatives to do things that raise the value of your property. Is that difficult to understand?
so he thinks his property value going up is the same thing as him building something. thats not wealth creation thats just winning the zip code lottery
