On your bad issues, you want to act like Trump on abortion — moderate on substance AND downplay it politically.
A lot of Dems are weirdly into showy hippie-punching which is sort of the opposite strategy.

Helps when your voters are in on the plan. Most pro-life groups knew to keep their mouth shut because the outcome for them will ultimately be better politically
