This is just (trade deficit)/(trade amount*two variables we assume to be 1 for no reason). It's the same formula everyone is laughing at them for, they're just using tau and phi as variables. LOL

As a math person my question is why did they use different symbols for Phi in different places? Seems like someone used /phi inline and /varphi in the displayed equation. Or perhaps LaTeX for the displayed equation and regular text elsewhere.

Another very interesting thing - the underlying assumption is that without trade barriers, imports and exports would be exactly equal, implying that all countries have the same endowments, which... is a very woke assumption!

From the USTR. Much depends on parameter values. They have taken import elasticity at -4 and price pass-through of tariffs at 0.25. Multiply them, and you get a value of -1, leaving trade deficit divided by imports. Everything changes if parameter values are different
