If you slowly drag across the video you can see when it first changes planning direction and it was so unbelievably early
I'm trying to think what I would have done in this situation and I think I would have just slammed the breaks and hope for the best - not sure if that would have worked though
>90% drivers don't have those reflexes self-driving will end deadly accidents deadly accidents are 99% caused by human stupidity
It's fantastic that it knew to avoid her, but the event looks faster due to the choppy video. Look at the top right corner for actual driving speed. I hope that Waymo and Tesla vehicles can do the same maneuver safely at higher speeds as well.
if you watch closely, the reaction to even the very first moment of instability of the scooter is near instantanious remarkable
That’s great! It’s going to be fun to see Wayno vs. Tesla in the coming years. Sadly, I think it’ll take a long time before it reaches Europe.
Better than the average driver forsure but good drivers would’ve switched to the left lane even before approaching the scooter to give him space after the other car passed on the left, the best drivers predict the unexpected more often than they react to it, I’d trust it over an

the most impressive part is that it slows down to let the car passing it by get out of the way before the major correction. I would like to see how it behaves if there is not free space and/or incoming traffic in the other empty space. Either way, much better than most humans.
try and convince me that people will pay more for human driver. is the best thing that happened to cab ride experience - I don't get sick, I don't need to do forced small talk, I feel safer.
Well done to the team at Waymo for working hard enough that these things can avoid things like that, but I can't help but feel uneasy at how it just continues on its way without even slowing down. A person would check on her.
Is the top half a sort of educational visualisation, or is that more or less what the car sees in real time? Looks like a mix of hard-coded map and real time camera/lidar?
LiDARs are essential. Has little to do with the video, Tesla might have done the same. But for me to feel safe I need the autopilot to be always aware of any obstacles to avoid, instead of hoping for the pixel pattern to be recognised from the video stream.
Why would anyone ride a scooter along side a busy road like that when there is a sidewalk? ⚰️
Let Waymo overpower tires and turn off traction control to break traction for better manueverability. Waymo wants to Tokyo drift, we must let it
Would this quick reaction time have been possible with Tesla's FSD? I always believe physical sensors complementing the Camera modules would be the best option rather than just relying on Camera (Computer Vision) ? I may be wrong but would like to hear your thoughts.
Why is this car following the ped so close in the first place? Isn’t that just bad driving?
