This is even worse than I imagined from the summary. They snatched him off the street and detained him overnight even though he was carrying his ID and social security card proving his US citizenship on him the whole time.

well, we told you it was coming. ICE detained Julio Noriega, a 54-year-old US citizen, for the crime of walking while Hispanic. wbez.org/immigration/20

Dragging someone off the street in handcuffs and imprisoning them overnight is a pretty big deal! Some people will get fired, miss doctor's appointments, leave loved ones terrified! It takes a matter of seconds to check a wallet first!!
I understand that even in the best system we can reasonably come up with, mixups and mistakes will happen, but they should not happen and should not take this long to resolve when a US citizen is carrying their ID and their social security card.
this guy was not, but it doesn't inspire confidence that they didn't make any mistakes while sending people to El Salvador with no trial and no chance to present their case
Her murder was a tragedy, and I think we should work to reduce murders. Arresting random US citizens in the streets will neither bring her back nor prevent future murders - and in fact time ICE spends on this is time it's not spending tracking down criminals.
I wish you guys would stop lying about how many illegal immigrants there are. The lie gets used to justify more and more extreme measures to try to 'find' 20 million people who don't exist. Just ask grok how many Biden let in:

This is why due process is good Executive branch is using an old ass law to skip over due process for these people. Likely not going to listen to her courts either. He'd need to be impeached and removed but that won't happen until his cult grip breaks
This wasn't a mistake, man, it was a malicious act. ICE grabbed a brown guy without even checking his ID. What reason did they even have to assume he was an illegal immigrant? They didn't even know who he was when they grabbed him. That's not a whoopsy.
You absolutely wouldn't be happy to deal with it if it happened to you, you lost your mind when the government asked you to wear some paper over your mouth
So… it was enough to prove he was a citizen after being arrested but not enough when he was initially detained? Are you always this slow or just pretending to be slow on the internet?
If you read the whole thread, I specifically said that I agree errors happened, but there should be a better process to verify a US citizen with ID card on them:

Even a good police system will occasionally have cases of mistaken identity, but when they happen it's a good opportunity to take a look at the process and think about whether it could be improved to reduce the rate of wrongful detentions
Lmfao... You said overnight and it clearly says "most of the night", both are vague and yours is incorrect even by the poorly worded article - which is meant to seem worse than it was already.
Spending one night in a lockup is not the end of the world. I’m happy to deal with if it means getting rid of dangerous criminals and keeping us safe. Small price to pay.
But it happens so rarely, how does it affect you? You know like trans women taking 800 medals from girls. It happens so few times it doesn't really affect you. Right?
The point you’re missing is this. ICE wouldn’t have to be doing hard street sweeps trying to pick up criminal illegal aliens, if Sanctuary cities would stop releasing arrestee hold requests into the wild. Since they are being forced to throw out a wide net to recapture these
Or, Illinois could stop giving IDs to illegals and issue only Real ID compliant identification. Or, they could share information with the Federal govt. So unfortunately, verification was delayed. It’s not this poor man’s fault, it’s Illinois.
I don’t see a date. When did this happen? Are there documents that show the date?
did he produce said identification, or was he trying to be all Billy badass and teach them evil ICE agents a lesson? Don't cause no trouble, won't be no trouble.
If there weren't millions more that deserve deportation, I might have some sympathy. Thinking of Laken Riley, I'll withhold the sympathy card. Shit happens🤷‍♀️

These stories are crafted to pull on the heartstrings of White women White men must harden their hearts and tell their women to STFU
Now imagine if he had left his wallet home. With no due process after the arrest, he'd likely be in a prison in El Salvador right now.
Blackbagging people off the streets three months into the presidency by essentially an official sturmabteilung. Boy, you guys are in for a rough four years!
I disagree with the framing that that makes it *worse*. Is it somehow more okay to snatch random people off the street if they don't have their social security card on them?
Buying pizza while brown is now a detainable offense in the American Reich. People are not walking around with their birth certificates or passports on a trip to get food and idiots acting like they should are either bots or crappy Americans who don't believe their own bs.
Disgusting. What's worse are the magas blaming Dems in importing immigrants for their failure to identify this man.
Noriega probably didn't offer much of a fuss because he knew it was an opportunity for a massive lawsuit payout, and honestly. smart move.
It’s time to impeach Donald Trump and dismantle his despotic regime immediately. It’s officially a regime now; there’s no sugar coating this one.
If corrupt democrat thugs did not erase the borders in the first place none of this would be happening Blame hussein obama
I am assuming the Hispanic community is ok with this, considering they voted in record numbers despite his exact words. I support people's decisions, and this is the one they made.
This is why the FTCA exists. Now, if one wants to argue about issues with the FTCA could be better, or not, that is a far more worthwhile conversation.
When you started issuing documents to illegals, this is the result you knew was coming. Stop complaining about it.
We should deport anyone if there’s a risk that occasionally someone will be briefly detained by mistake. Get this man fifty bucks for his trouble! I’d be pissed but in the end this is no big deal.
Welp, perhaps if Democrats didn’t allow a million criminals into the country unchecked accident like this wouldn’t happen.
They didn’t “snatch him off the street”, they raided a restaurant that was employing illegal immigrants and he was caught up until they could verify his identity and release him. Maybe if you didn’t bring in tens of millions of illegal immigrants?
