Insane week for permitting reform (really feels like we've reached a tipping point): 1. NEPA exemption for chip fabs passed Congress 2. NEPA reform for wildfire prevention passed House 3. NEPA catex for geothermal passed House 4. And now Harris calls for permitting reform

Harris today is promising to reform permitting to speed building projects. (I think this is new but could have missed?) "Projects take too long to go from concept to reality - it happens in blue states; it happens in red states; and it's a national problem ... China is not

It’s crazy, all the climate people leave DC for NYC climate week and suddenly we pass every single permitting bill x.com/alecstapp/stat…
and no one's really talking about it, which is probably the only way it'll get done "boring zzzzzzzz" can sneak by quietly, a huge polarized fight about deregulation or protecting the environment or whatever will not
For all our political issues, the American system seems much better at getting things done when we really have to than Europe

This is a BFD: H.R. 6474 just passed the House. It amends the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to include geothermal along with oil and gas, creating the opportunity for categorical exclusions under NEPA! x.com/housedailypres…

Wouldn't it be better, instead of permitting reform specifically for semiconductor fabs, to take a more general approach and simplify the the permitting process for a whole range of industrial companies?
It’s great to see such incremental reforms taking place! Hopefully they will be successfully implemented soon🫡

This sounds good, but it's a misquote. There's no period after permitting reform. The quote immediately turns sour by endorsing public input and priorities, which means permitting reform without eliminating the local resistance problem: x.com/JStein_WaPo/st…

Would be great if this is a tipping point. Harris being on board is good news given that she seems to have a 50% shot of winning. I think Trump's support here is a given. Excessive fondness for regulation is not one of his shortcomings.
It's not "reform" to grant exceptions to favored industries. Now the marginal not-exempted projects are the less favored ones which won't present as urgent a case for categorical reform, which means we don't get out of the trap of "everything is illegal by default".
We went from blocking keystone to drill baby drill and trickled down renewable permitting in four years. Can’t wait for what’s next
I can see the benefits of permitting reform every single day in my small town. Our city's planning dept pre-approved a handful of house designs. Developers using one of them get to skip a bunch of permitting steps AND FEES. So many of these houses are being built as in-fill now!
This is one of the few proposals I’ve seen from either presidential candidates that would actually lower inflation
Eliminate standing for NIMBY lawsuits preventing Light Rail, Zoning reform, parking reform specifically in Austin TX.
Weaking of environmental reforms to give corporations a free pass to pollute our air and water and defile our public lands is NOT "permitting reform". Greedy growth mongers like you turn a blind eye to the reasons strong environmental regulations were originally implemented.
