"no one has died" because of feeding USAID to the woodchipper, Elon claimed. In this devastating piece the NYT went out and learned some of their names and stories:

Something particularly abhorrent about killing a bunch of the poorest people in the world and denying that you’re doing it. If you’re going to do it on nationalist grounds at least own it.
If, like me, you find this situation absolutely tragic and sympathize with these children, the most effective and moral thing you can do is donate money directly to these causes or to organizations that help similarly impoverished people around the world.
In 1950 before white people started pumping their nations with foreign aid there were about 180 million sub Saharan Africans and they desperately needed our help. 75 years later there are 1.2 billion sub Saharan Africans and they desperately need our help.
People who are sick and relying on the wealthiest nation in the world to stay alive are now dying because the wealthiest man in the world wants a tax cut. If this were a dystopian movie set in the future you could not make a more vile plot — nor a more inhumane villain.
As an American taxpayer, what do I get out of helping poor Third World folks? What’s my ROI?
Aren't you -- personally -- as responsible as anyone else? You were too cheap to donate 12 cents a day to keep this person in good health. I've just learned about this person's health problems, but you already knew about them, and were apparently too selfish to give her the 12¢.
there've been a bunch of efforts to raise money to bridge the gaps created by the stop-work order, but the supply chain disruptions caused by the government's abrupt freeze makes it really hard to fill all the gaps at once.
HIV meds are really cheap from India and Sudan borders them by sea. Less than 1% of the American price Imagine what they could accomplish without having to buy from America at high prices
PEPFAR procures HIV medication at extremely low prices thanks to large purchase contracts - $60/year in their 2023 budget
The left used USAID to run a network of scholar-activist-ngos, 1% of which did good work & other 99% was to fund unrest. Every death here is on the left
'cancel the democracy promotion programs and not PEPFAR, the famous conservative program that saves tons of lives super cheaply' was totally an option that could easily have been taken
I have donated 30% of my income to the most cost effective programs I can find since I took my first job. I hope to donate around $30k this year.
Untrue. Many have died and many more will die without their help. They are human beings and we are Christians. Well, at least some of us are.
I am not personally a Christian but have been grateful for and inspired by the many Christians who have forcefully spoken out on this.
The New York Slimes write articles and completely skew the facts to fit THEIR narrative. Had you of sourced a reputable media outlet; I might have been compelled to read it. Moving along now pumpkin!
Would that USAID money have been better spent helping hurricane and wildfire victims?

Devastating. I can think of a long line of people responsible for her death - her family, her community, her government. Not sure why the NYT thinks American taxpayers should be at the top of the list for why this girl passed.
Is the - and - suggesting that poor people in Africa are somehow the permanent wards of the American taxpayer? That’s ridiculous. They’ve had billions of $$$ from us over decades. When does it end?
So what you’re saying is that every bit of money that USAID handed out was for things like little children with AIDS, huh? It’s a lie so big that I’m amazed you could type it.
What's devastating is continuing to prop up grifting organizations and excusing their corruption. Maybe try calling out the graft and demanding integrity. Think of how many more people could have been helped if they hadn't been callous thieves. Your sad puppy stories no longer
Now explain why this is the responsibility of the American tax payer. You're telling me that not one person in her own country has 12 cents?
Not an American. We're not obligated to care for the entire world if we can't make the entire world give Americans money, women and resources.
Where are the billionaire philanthropists and the churches? Where are the charities? Taxpayers are not the world’s charity piggy bank. Someone there had $0.12. Give me a break!! This guilt trip angle is a loser.
PEPFAR is an abject failure that has been a massive net negative to public health globally& it’s past time we ended it. “Wear one the free condoms we gave you when you bang” hasn’t gotten through in 23 years& $100+ billion, with 1.2 million new cases of HIV in PEPFAR countries in

PEPFAR is a failure. *Over a million more people get HIV (1.2 million in 2023 alone) every year despite us spending over $100 billion and providing every possible benefit including reminding people to take their meds, free everything including condoms, meds, education, and

This is, once again, an attempt at emotional blackmail. It is not the responsibility of the US government to supply drugs to foreign countries using taxpayers' money. This is work that charities, with private donations, should take on.
Always said to hear about people dying. However, the lost ID card & no case worker in January from an apparent USAID funded agency is connected to Musk cuts. Those didn't start until late Jan. If agencies were 100% dependent on USAID funds both of those things are surprising.
What countries do these people live in? It is the job of THEIR governments to take care of their people. Where are the bishops to point the bony finger of scorn at them?
This is interesting but we'd have to know how large the scope is and compare to how much money has been saved by Elon's effort (I suspect the number isn't nearly as high as he'd like us to think)

the fact is, it seems the writer Nicholas Kristof doesn't care to spend 12 cents a day to keep Achol Deng alive otherwise he would just give them that money
Achol has been on medication for HIV for how long? If she didn't have AIDS, how could she have died in two months from lack of medication? I have HIV and am on medication. That doesnt make sense. At best, she should have been undetectable, at worst the virus was reduced. That
Are there any people in the world that American taxpayers aren't morally obligated to sustain?
You do realize American taxpayers are already $36 trillion in debt, and we are borrowing $1 trillion every 6 months for the interest alone. America is not the welfare system for the world. THE BANK OF AMERICA IS CLOSED.
Even IF this is true, it is not our job to feed some stranger 5,000 miles away. They have their own family AND Government 😐
People died when the Roman government collapsed and stopped the bread dole in Rome too. We can do it by choice to try and stop our own collapse or stick our heads in the sand and have it happen anyway.
There’s a lot of good we could do if we had unlimited credit cards. Sadly, we have to live in the realm of reality.
My non profit went to ph for 2 years. This year we didn’t. Am I responsible for what they don’t have this year?
There are millions like these that got vaporized by missiles and drones.. and those deaths were cheered as "shock and awe", "collateral damage", "morally justified" These fuckers in the media are heartless, they only cry now because their kickback side-cash is drying up and they
The problems of others are not our own. We have people in our own country dying of AIDS and other diseases let's start there and then if we can help others help others charity begins at home and you're sending out our money without our approval that's not charity that's theft
None of these people are American and none of us consented to paying for their medication. There are charities that you can donate to that are far more effective at this sort of thing than the state anyway. If you love Africans with AIDS so much, go over there yourself.
How sad none of the other 192 United Nations members would step up for 12 cents per day.
An estimated 4.2 million young people experience homelessness annually, including 700,000 unaccompanied minors. I don’t care about Africa
I quite literally don't care. We don't have 12 cents. We have 36T in debt. We are not responsible for the rest of the world. No matter how much you cry, it does not change that fact.

One might offer that the 12 cents a day is a completely irrelevant number based subsidies. As actual medicines not mentioned will use most likely treatments and US pricing for fair comparison. ...US total daily cost is approximately $41.14 for TLE and $63.34 for TLD. These

Nobody else in the world will spend the money, so it’s your fault for stopping. That’s some seriously evil emotional blackmail. Using the Hostage Puppy
What a stupid story and post. The idea that if an individual dies anywhere in the world because they lack funding you would blame the US instead of their own country and/or the war mongers of Europe spending trillions grinding up Slavs in Eastern Europe is beyond the pale.
Why doesn’t their own country pay 12 cents a day to keep them alive?
Wow, that's a LOT of families with TOTALLY DEFINITELY STRAIGHT husband's who JUST LOVE CHILLING WITH THE BOYS. Somehow they just miraculously got AIDS. Weird.
At just twelve cents a day if you decide not to donate $50,000 just remember you’ll have personally caused the death of over 1,100 children this year. How will you be able to live with yourself. Donate Now!!!
I don't wish unnecessary death on anyone, but you can't ask me to pay for a bandaid. The plight of the humble African is not why I pay taxes.
Kelsey. You can willfully put forward 12 cents a day. Did you do that?
If the medicine actually worked, it would take years for HIV to progress to AIDS. So USAID must have been giving him sugar cubes, if he truly died that quickly. 🤔
Let the ministry of Jesus Christ of Nazareth be null, void and of utter uselessness if the one n those who just disappeared are hiding a spoon i Just saw in my apartment are not utterly destroyed n all in their kingdom be cursed n suffer all of Yahweh's wrath in Jesus Christ name

I can't find the clause in the Constitution granting Congress authority to spend our money on ANY citizens, let alone any that aren't ours. Neither could the guy who created the Constitution, James Madison. Where'd you find it?
Image
It’s sad but it’s not the USA’s responsibility to keep our own citizens and country in significant debt to pay for other countries.
If it's only twelve cents a day, they should have just bought their own AIDS medicine. We're not paying for them anymore.
So no one. USAID funded corrupt power brokers providing them with insane salaries while providing nothing to any of these people.
