Gavin Newsom says tariffs may not disappear if a Democrat is in the White House: "I can't guarantee that, but I can guarantee you nothing like this — the level of disrespect, talking about the 51st state on the basis of our history, our proud past, our present, how important you

Was also an opportunity for Kamala to differentiate vs Biden! “Americans want lower costs and that’s going to be my top priority!”
even as union membership has become outright pro trump and union leadership is flirting with the right, their suicidal obsession with tariffs has completely won over the Democratic Party
It’s because unions support tariffs (in conjunction with fixing domestic supply chains and promoting domestic manufacturing development outside of punitive tariffs).
Do we think voters even know what “free trade” is? It’s one of the major reasons the US can’t build or do anything, because its industrial base is so hollowed-out by its acquiescence to mercantilism in Asia. Also tariffs are revenue sources; important for all the tax-revolt Dems
Tariffs are 100% an online discussion. No normies ever think about it. Probably because no normie has any idea what a tariff is supposed to be.
Some tariffs needed; protecting particular endangered industry or retaliatory (another country elevates the cost of our goods so hi as to have no export purchase value). Weigh the pros/cons. e.g. US Steel mfr benefits import tariff/but⬆️cost for companies relying on steel import
Unions are a large Democratic constituency, and most of them favor tariffs and protectionist trade policies. Therefore, the Dems are trying to be careful. It would be great to hear a full-throated defense of free trade from them though 🤣
I genuinely don't understand his rationale for not giving a direct answer on this. Did he just ramble so hard he made himself unclear or does he actually support anything like the current level of tariffs or just certain targeted tariffs? Should've been a layup.
recent polling indicated that even tariffs against China are not popular anymore. how stupid can the Democrats be by not openly campaigning against it in 2028?
They need to frame this as an affordability issue while emphasizing that tariffs (more so finding a way to gain exemption) are another vector for administration corruption and pay to play schemes. Seems so obvious
We know. You’re genocidal communist monsters who think you can violently overthrow the 2024 election because you LIE about why the president was elected in the first place. Screeching “TaRiFfS aRe UnPoPuLar1!1!1!1!” ad nauseam isn’t an argument, and it ignores that voters voted
Tariffs were a centerpiece of the Trump 2024 campaign. The people voted for tariffs. Railing against Tariffs can easily veer into lecturing or haranguing voters. People don't like being told they were wrong.
Democrats should be like Biden, have a consistent tariff schedule and industrial policy
