We need to process the minerals, not just mine them! China doesn't do all the mining, but it does do all the processing.

Part of industrial policy then should be to bring minerals processing back. I only know one American company, MP Materials (

stock). I know there are probably a lot more in the private sector or small ones. China has 85-90% not all.

Absolutely correct. We really don't have a mining problem. Some of us are working on this seriously, but the number of people in this country who understand this point is small.

Rare earths are nasty to refine. I hope we get some traction ... There's a lot of chemists that we can put to work!

Who is “we”? Would you be satisfied if Canada did much of the processing? How abt Israel, South Korea, Mexico, India, or Brazil? The “extremely not we” group must include, along with China, Russia, North Korea, Venezuela, . . . . (Many countries would be incapable of processing.)
