On TNG era Star Treks, they did stars outside windows using folded-up bits of foil/mylar glued onto black duvetyne, reflecting a bright light. I always thought it'd be fun to simulate it in CG for that very specific vibe and.. it kinda works.

When the CG camera wants to see like a real camera, then more real in camera tricks like this would translate just as well right?
Better than hacking normals i guess. Free defocus, although I wonder if you could cheat the window with a portal that simulated distance? 🤔🤪
I used to love doing CG experiments like this. I wish more people learned basic 3D software skills as its such a universally useful way to map out ideas, plans, experiments and fold in real physics and real-time rendering. Blender/unreal should be part of a healthy kids diet.
It would be cool do a deep dive into the Star Trek practical effects, like you did with Flight of the Navigator. The old cinema tricks are soon to be lost to time. I'm particularly interested on how they filmed the ships and edited the film with all the glowy bits and what not.
