The Atlantic has been perhaps *the* leading American publication ringing the alarm bells about Donald Trump's authoritarian threat to American (and global) democracy. They are also running economically illiterate pro-Trump propaganda because the Hewlett Foundation paid them.

Pretty hilarious: "... if 1 million consumers each pay a $5 tariff, $5 million has not been set on fire—it has moved from their pockets to the U.S. Treasury. The nation is not necessarily any richer or poorer. Some other tax could be reduced by $5 million." So, effectively a tax
They’re also the publication currently hell bent on whitewashing freedom corner, which is full of people like my neo-Nazi stalker, who is pictured in this flyer. If they’re the leading force, we are fucked lol.

Is the threat that he'll use his DOJ and other Federal agencies to go after political opponents? Or is that something Dems think is acceptable now? I can't keep up.

Having learned an awful lot about history. This flippant use of the word authoritarian by people I feel are intelligent just makes them seem childish and/or deceitful.
Perfect Example of a Rag that promotes Tribalism. Trump critics have been indoctrinated to hate him through relentless attacks, misinformation, and media diatribes.
Altho no one would call Oren Cass MAGA, as he is intelligent & has never been a sycophant Trumper, it is worth noting, he co-authored the Heritage Foundation’s labor section in Project 2025, drafted with the intent of being implemented by the next Republican president.
I mostly know the Hewlett Fdn for underwriting my public broadcasting addiction. Quick lookup shows pretty liberal causes. What do you think its deal is? Like, liberal but also some weird conservative economic streak? I'm just not following the logic of this claim.
They should move back to Boston. The Atlantic was always contrarian, but it had a flinty New England vibe that not even Harper's could emulate.
Press behavior is much less confusing if we first ask “does the action fit the business model?” Instead we ask if it fits our individual view of what the press is supposed to do. It is always the business model (and always has been). Model changes as communication tech changes.
I actually thought it was reasonable based on solid economics. If you are still looking for a beef with the arguments made in the Atlantic article are similar to the ones he makes defending industrial policy.

I actually thought the article was quite a solid defense of tariffs. It is one sided but no more one sided that anti tariff economists have been. The arguments are legitimate economic defenses of tariffs using real Econ research. (Eg one of Krugman biggest papers was pro tariff) x.com/mattyglesias/s…
They've been a propaganda mag for the highest bidder for quite some time, it's just people tend to not notice when it confirms their biases.
They also fueled a lot of the smears and attacks against students of color by hacks like Friedersdorf who makes shit up for clicks but it was good for business so they ran with it
This is highly misleading. Hewlett Foundation gave The Atlantic a grant for a series of articles called 'The New Rules.' While many of the articles are non-partisan, plenty are not friendly to Trump, including the most recent article talking about 'Trump's deranged plan.'

He makes sense to me, and to every other working class American. The rich can pay the extra $5 on their smart phones, it won't kill them.
A-hem. Search engines are your friend: “Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs, owns The Atlantic through her organization, Emerson Collective. She acquired a majority stake in The Atlantic in 2017.”
Ezra had Oren Cass on his podcast and you cannot come to any conclusion other than Cass is dumb.
The Atlantic is generally illiberal. Therefore they dislike some aspects of Trump's agenda, but they love economic interventionism. They are fairly consistent.
The greater authoritarian threat comes from the Biden administration since they want to control online discourse.
Matthew, if these arguments are so economically-illiterate can you explain why the domestic firearms industry has been so hugely successful since the import ban, so much so that foreign manufacturers are opening up production facilities here?

What specifically about the piece is economically illiterate? Are anti-tariff voices from Peterson Institute or large importers somehow more credible?! As (hardly a Trump propagandist) often points out: people are not purely consumers
Boo. Debates and differing viewpoints at prominent publications should happen more. This isn't even a left right debate. Reagan, Clinton, and Bush expanded free trade, Obama, Trump, and Biden decreased it. I like free trade, but I'm glad the discussion is happening.
It’s important to provide balance for truth and observable facts. Political objectivity requires the Atlantic to publish lies and obfuscation. Even when it damages credibility built over more than a century. I don’t make the rules.
While I agree with your assessment of tariffs, I don't find much wrong with hearing out the ideas of one of the leading candidates.
Who are you trying to fool? Atlantic is majority owned or controlled by Jobs' widow Powell. She's tied in deep with The Demos and the globalists and their "agenda". Here she is with her pal, Ghislaine, evil Epstein's collaborator. Atlantic is all propaganda, and rotten.

Is the argument compelling outside of the author and the story sponsor? Surely there is something wrong with the content and you are not merely pointing out a genetic fallacy of irrelevance. Point out what was economically illiterate. That's more important than the author.
Going without news for three days and returning to see Yglesias' unhinged culted views. It is frightening. What is Yglesias not capable of doing under propaganda? Where would he not go? 1930s Europe. People tell me, don't worry, he IS the Military Industrial Complex. This makes

The Hewlett Foundation that also funds many Brookings projects? You guys are really clasping at random straws.
Democracy according to Democrats: involuntarily replacing the electorate with nonconsensual mass legal & illegal immigration to dilute the voting weight of American citizens to irrelevance. They’re like directors trying to replace their own shareholders.
Is calling Trump a threat to democracy considered anti-Trump propaganda? If the entire argument can be defused by gently reminding someone that he was already president and we're now in our third election cycle since that happened, it's worth considering that label.
