Trump starts with guys like Comey and John Bolton precisely because he knows his opponents don’t like them so it’s hard to mobilize opposition. Once phony prosecutions of his enemies are normalized, he can go after bigger fish.

It’s not like malicious prosecution of political opponents hasn’t happened before—and been largely ignored because of who the defendant was. The difference now is that he is doing it directly as opposed to relying on local prosecutors to invent crimes.

So Comey and Bolton are just sympathetic pawns, not architects? To cast them as mere stepping stones in Trump’s revenge arc is reputational laundering. It strips them of agency and reframes their actions as incidental rather than instrumental.

I have always thought Mr. Comey got a bad rap on the Hillary thing. He made his statement when he believed she was going to win. Turned out to be a poor choice, but I never thought he deserved the backlash.

This presumes that they weren’t already normalized under the Biden DOJ. Most non-Dems realize this already started so they’ll likely ignore it either way. Unfortunately this is the cost of breaking norms and I fear that it’s going to be a new cycle of ugly prosecutions.

There is an element of truth to this: the corruption of the last 5-10 years, and the level of cleanup needed, is so profound that it will shock the average American conscience. Most are asleep, and must be eased into it. But it is necessary unless you prefer the end of the USG.

Comey may have broken the law. I'd like to see the evidence against him. Trump has won twice and maybe Comey wasn't the key to either. Comey and many other Dems/Reps pursued the Russia thing that proved Russians interferred, but nothing else.

John Bolton is a national treasure. If he’d had his way, Venezuela would never have been run by leftist dictators, millions wouldn’t have then fled to the US. Russia wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine which would have been in NATO by now.

Comey deserves it. His actions went beyond simply doing due diligence on whether Trump was compromised. He was part of the group of government insiders that worked to spit Trump out as a government pathogen, and that by doing so debased our institutions.
