As of July 2024, every fifth American had either tried a GLP-1 drug or was actively on one. If I scale this based on the growth in claims data since then, it's safe to say that one-in-four Americans have at least tried GLP-1RAs like Ozempic or Zepbound.

Why? Rising popularity is one thing. Most patients who are eligible for insurance coverage have still not used the drugs. Medical associations recommending these drugs for practically everything likely also contributes. But falling prices might be the biggest factor.

Ultimately, the future looks incredibly bright. If we adopted policies of 'GLP-1s for all', we would eliminate the majority of obesity in a single year. Lots would remain, but still! Appreciate that a huge portion of the fat people problem is now optional.
A bar chart displaying obesity rates for men and women. Bars show current obesity rates at 39.8% for men and 43.0% for women. Additional bars indicate potential reductions with GLP-1RA drugs: Semaglutide reducing rates to 13.3% for men and 21.3% for women, Tirzepatide to 9.6% for men and 14.0% for women, and Retatrutide to 6.9% for men and 10.8% for women. Text labels include percentages and drug names.
