everyone thinks for some reason that they are closer to becoming a millionaire than becoming homeless.
Readers added context
Recent polling shows a majority of US voters believe they are more likely to become homeless than a millionaire. US data show roughly 23.6 million millionaires versus ~746,000 experiencing homelessness on a given night. dataforprogress.org/blog/2026/8/13… investopedia.com/new-report-rev… hud.gov/news/hud-no-26…

LOL. Massive failure of understanding not only probabilities but of trying, even just a little bit, to think about how society works. Typical US-conservative analysis tbh.
if theres so many millionaires running around how come you never see one stab somebody in a park or push an old person onto the subway tracks
Barely 2% of the population and they manage to shit up every single public space in America. This statistic makes me sick. I've never hated bums more than I do right now at this very instant.
And most of the 750,000 homeless are in temporary transition and "homed" within a few months. The chronic homeless tend to be estimated in the 150,000 to 200,000 range.
It's amazing how much millionaires are there in the US. - More than 20% (1 in 5) of US households are millionaires. -40% of all millionaires worldwide are Americans. -Just last year, 444.000 (!) Americans became millionaires!
Worth noting that 750K is a one-night count taken in January. Far more people experience homelessness at some point in a year, and most of those 24 million millionaires are 60+ with their net worth tied up in a house and a 401k
Your overall point is correct, but the ratio is probably more like ~5. We are absolutely horrible at counting the homeless. Seemingly intentionally.
Even among those, most are short-term situations they recover from. Chronically homeless is only about 150k. You are 2333x more likely to be a millionaire in America than to be chronically homeless.
There are about 24 million millionaires in the US. HUD’s latest point-in-time count found roughly 746,000 people homeless on one night. Those are the numbers. But the PIT is a known undercount—it routinely misses vehicle dwellers, people in RVs, couch-surfers, and others who
The homeless compete for visibility while millionaires mostly compete for invisibility
Honestly insane. It shows how fucked up homeless people really are lmao (aka don't do drugs)
