Add the Syrian Uprising of 2024 to the list of world-shaking recent events that 1) caught everyone by surprise, 2) toppled a hated regime within days, 3) had millions switch sides through a preference cascade, and 4) transformed long-concealed discontent into euphoric celebration.

A profoundly symbolic moment for Syria: the toppling of Assad’s statue in Homs after the rebels took control, facing little resistance. Homs is regarded as the capital of the Syrian revolution that began in 2011 & suffered one of the most brutal crackdowns

Other unanticipated political explosions that shook the world, last half-century: Iranian Revolution (1979), East European Revolutions (1989), Arab Spring (2011). They share with the unfolding toppling of the Assad regime the same dynamics.
My burning question-when does something like this happen in Iran? The Regime has slowly rotting from the inside for years. The multiple blows their proxies have taken suggest Regime is weaker than most observers suspected. But what will be the last straw?🤔
I'm pretty sure there are several governments in the middle-east and elsewhere that were not surprised at all by this. If anyone was surprised they should probably double check their sources of information and news.
I disagree. This is not a revolutionary moment. The dynamics here are the result of a military offensive. This is like celebrations in France after allied troops arrive in 1944.
