SF on Saturday morning: a large % of Waymos are ferrying solo kids (8-14 yo), presumably to sports or other activities. A friend told me that 85% of parents at their kids’ SF school use Waymo for kids pickup / drop off: earlier it was ~10% using Uber and Lyft. Shows how Waymo has grown by expanding the market, serving segments who otherwise were non-consumers of ride sharing. Though it’s expensive to build companies serving non-consumption markets, some of the best and greatest companies (SpaceX, AirBnB, etc) have and will be built creating new habits and markets.

I’m starting to see more Waymos in school pickup lines. After talking to some parents, it sounds like they’ve had solid experiences and feel comfortable letting their kids ride in them.
Yes, my kids only use Waymo. From the very beginning they had a strong preference for Waymo because they felt safer.
How are you determining a large percentage of this morning’s Saturday rides are kids 8-14 traveling by themselves?
Feels like the usual, build it and they’ll come scenario. Who could’ve thought initially that parents would trust an auto pilot vs a human pilot to take care of their kids
interesting consumer behavior for sure. but this still seems so risky to me. like what happens if the car breaks down or there's a computer / engine malfunction, and your kid is just left in the middle of city with no one 🤔
Do you think kids are calling them themselves? Have phones? Or is there some sort of verification system and the parents are ‘calling’ for their kids?

Do the 8 year olds get phones these days? My kid is 6 and I was wondering at which age he can take them safely (and legally). 18 seems old if you can drive at 16. But 8???
I’m surprised the percentage is that high tbh. Seems like an easy kidnapping waiting to happen
Who knows someone living in Las Vegas or Nevada? 🌵🎰 That state dishes out $8,000 per grant for each student and processes applicants faster than you can say "Jimmy John's" – under 2 weeks! 🚀🥪 I can help them enroll 8-10 students per month. You do the math – that's some

That's really sad. Do these parents not want to enjoy their coffee and morning read while occasionally glancing up to see their kid improving at whatever it is they're doing? Providing that post-practice encouragement is essential for confidence building. Cali still fuvked
Totally reasonable use case, and I'd do it too. But I can't help but think about how my dad shifted his work schedule to 6am - 2pm so that he could make school pickup...
I'd argue Replit, Lovable, Bolt (the AI app makers) also do this. Too expensive to hire a developer to build a simple personal app but now you can spend $15 in credits to make something yourself
Autonomy is going to be neutral on the carbon agenda than improve it because anything that cuts costs as much will drive (car) usage up 10x. Even if person miles stay the same , more solo occupancy and more empty trips , will ensure the overall no of trips go up drastically
Waymo rides are reviewed often and under 18 aren't able to ride alone for valid health and safety reasons.
Imagine how much cheaper it would be, if the streets around the school were pedestrianized and safe for the kids to walk to school. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I can't wait for Waymo the expand service to the valley solely for school pickup and drop off.
SF kids taking Waymos to school and after school activities is a huge use case, uncovered by Waymo. plus the real-time remote monitoring and live convos w the support center when a kid tries to sit in the driver’s seat etc have helped polish the UX. Uber can’t match
Talking about Waymo expanding when it’s only available in three cities instead of acknowledging affluent people would rather their kid unattended around a robot vs a driver that looks like you and I is missing the forest for the trees.
