Storing atmospheric CO2 in oceans as bicarbonate is an important carbon removal pathway that is woefully understudied & underfunded, especially relative for ocean-based carbon removal. River liming is particularly exciting because: (1/x)

a) itโ€™s something weโ€™ve already done to remediate historic pollution (acid rain); b) doing it in acidic rivers not only draws down CO2--remediating the impacts of climate change--it also has *immediate local* benefits;
c) as a result, thereโ€™s often strong community support; d) itโ€™s inland, so doesnโ€™t trigger the insane mess of international governance conversations around ocean-based carbon removal (which we *do* have to figure out ASAP if we want to remediate climate at scale).
Ocean-based carbon removal has the potential to remediate the global acid-base balance we have totally screwed up. Support for permanent carbon removal has been deeply insufficient and too narrowly focused on one technology (direct air capture). We need much more enabling policy.
Perhaps counterintuitively, offtakes (demand-pull/purchases) are a great tool for responsible innovation: buyers define what delivery looks like, and can embed guardrails on everything from ecosystem governance to community benefits to ensure that projects are done well.
Itโ€™s not clear to me why one would add already-sequestered CO2 (in the form of calcite (CaCO3) to fresh water and call that conversion to HCO3= as a net atmospheric reduction. Makes no sense.
You may already be aware that the Sabin Institute at Columbia U is doing a lot of good work on ocean sequestration. I just heard about it during a visit last week.
River liming is a clever way to enhance nature's own carbon sink. I'm excited to see the impact of this method, especially in coastal areas where the benefits can be twofold - restoring damaged ecosystems while sequestering CO2.
Very exciting! Dr. F., do you buy their claim that 10-15% of anthropogenic emissions reductions is technically possible & reasonably economic, and that it would entail local ecology/economic benefits at those scales? Cuz, obvs, that would be absolutely fucking huge ๐Ÿ˜…
Seismic Activity at Yellowstone Caldera In my analysis, I forecasted that the Yellowstone Caldera would encounter increased seismic activity around April and May 2024, with the potential for a significant eruption, at least in the form of a hydrothermal explosion. I specifically

Today, my dad got a phone call no parent ever wants to get. He heard me tell him I was in a serious car accident, injured, and under arrest for a DUI and I needed $30,000 to be bailed out of jail. But it wasn't me. There was no accident. It was an AI scam.
