This reminds me of the insane fact that the elevator union's contract straight up prohibits preassembly and prefabrication in factories

Learned yesterday that when the Comcast building was being built in Philly in 2006, the plumber’s union vehemently opposed the installation of waterless urinals and arrived at a compromise by building a piping system behind the wall that just never got connected for actual use

Let’s not forget that the reason we have the world’s most expensive elevators is some random firefighter thought it would be nice.

Case in point: our elevator industry is based on the desire of a Glendale AZ firefighter. The net outcome is elevators that cost 3x those in the EU. Rent-seeking & added cost, less ~real~ accessibility for those who need it. But hey you can spin a stretcher around fully flat x.com/jasonc_nc/stat…

These kind of curated labor-hour generators may be good for creating more billable hours for union contractors on a job site, but it is also indicative of why so many developers have turned from union labor to merit-shop labor. The production levels are often incomparable.
American ports are another comical topic. The automated ports in Singapore are quite a sight to behold (their new one that they’re making is even more incredible!) Asia versus America:

This is why I don't support any unions. They served a purpose in the 1800s but are worse than useless now.
I wonder if that's the case in my state. Our elevators are regulated by the department of Amusement Rides.
unions hold back progress we know this. part of whats bearish abt the current admin is inability to get out of its own way regarding economic progress. making constructions/goods movement faster/efficient should be the 1st priority of any growth focused self respecting nation
How come there isn’t a fully integrated new entrant coming in without union workers and undercutting the whole industry? Is the barrier to entry so high?
Automation, LLMs, robotics, etc will make even jobs redundant. If we try to protect obsolete work, we’ll just be where Europe is in 10-20 years
Trump is obviously pre-occupied, but someone needs to remind him that even a little bit of deregulation can remove huge pressures on the economy and on inflation. Where is the deregulatory agenda? DOGE has gotten off a spur that's all about WF&A. The regulatory state itself,

Just like anything some unions are very bad for both their members and society, while others are good for their members and societies. Just like anything you have to judge their actions individually.
In the early 90's, I had a good friend who moved to Houston to be a stage manager for the brand new, most advanced opera house in the world... the Wortham Theater. Since he read music, he was often charged with manning the surtitles, BUT! Some fat, know nothing union guy had to

Let’s be realistic here, most architects are pretty shitty at their jobs. I’ve been a union elevator constructor for almost a decade and have had to essentially customize every single elevator I’ve ever built to building conditions. This isn’t practical in the slightest.
Capital holders put absolutely absurd restrictions on the economy: market at work Unions ask that work is done I a convenient place for them: CANCER!!!!!
You should impugn the employers at least as much as the union for agreeing to this stipulation
OK but I'm sick of the learned helplessness about this. The US is the richest country in the world and this can be solved by throwing money at it: every job with pre-assembled elevators includes a 200-hour no-show elevator union contract. That's cheaper than negotiating it.
This is insane. Can they just not hire non-union, or tell the union workers to pound sand & do the job they're being paid to do, or they don't get the contract? That's how it works in most of Europe
We can't be both pro-housing and pro-union (in this reality), and I think the center left is starting to realize that.
Raised in big union state. Had summer job in State/Fed job training for kids at a school. One set of janitors cleaned but was forbidden from moving any furniture. Whole diff set of janitors needed for that.
Unions are net good but like any group advocating for a specific membership, their interests don’t always align with broader values or result in the best decisions. Dems need to accept this
Its really crazy how bad unions are. I mean I'm open to the idea that they have good effects, but every time I hear a specific thing it's insane stuff like this.
Are we just screwed? There is this insane entanglement of special interests in municipal politics that goes across party lines. It's worse under Dems though because they've taken the position that unions are always right, even at the cost of society in general.
otis is among the largest defense contractors. Why do we spend so much on defense? Think you have your answers.
Now is DOGE did something useful about these things, public opinion would change. But I’m not even sure if they can.
Unions are very good for negotiating wages, safety issues, and making sure workers aren't fired unfairly. I don't think they should be allowed to preemptively negotiate how efficiently businesses can be run.
My question is who is the contract with? The manufacturers? Could another company start and make prefab elevators and undercut the market by not doing all this? What's stopping someone from importing prefabbed European elevators and putting them in buildings
We got kicked out of a power plant because after the 3rd day of working in dim conditions we changed a screw in lightbulb ourselves. They said we should have setup temporary lighting instead of taking away their job. They had 3 days to change it!
This is a management failure though, not a union issue. Unions will argue for all kinds of insane things because their reps are concerned with their members, not the business itself. It's Management's responsibility to draw hard lines on nonsense and when they don't...?
Germany and France have the world’s strongest unions and the world’s best engineering and manufacturing. It’s not a union issue. It’s a management issue. America’s slavery-forged management is incompatible with great. It’s great at mass middling.
isnt it ironic that part of the reasons dem governance sucks is it giving unions so much but also unions dont even vote dem because of socio cultural issues. How about an urionic free trade platform next time?
When you have an economy thats hostile to workers, to the point of causing problems, it should come as no surprise when workers in said economy are extremely defensive over their labor, to the point of causing problems.
Unions are supposed to protect workers but they often act like gatekeepers keeping innovation at bay. It’s no wonder building costs are through the roof.
