For first time, Washington and Tokyo oppose "any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force or coercion."

3/ Until now, Japan had talked about China’s attempts to change the status quo by force in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. This time, they talked about the Taiwan Strait.
That language was used in the Jan. 21, 2025 Quad foreign ministers statement.

It clarifies the arrangement but the post WWII peace treaty between the US and Japan and Japan’s recent defense arrangement with Taiwan meant Taiwan was already backed by Japan and the US.
Oppose is one thing but who is going to enforce it? Japan? The US? Talk is cheap.
Interesting change in language. This would enable Japanese response to the most likely scenario of Chinese escalation; being the maritime blockade of Taiwan.

Neither the US nor Japan – both of which China has defeated in battle – has the means to intervene in China's internal affairs. They're just posturing.

The Japanese Prime Minister in his speech with Trump yesterday said that they have agreed that Article 5 of the Japan US Security Treaty applies to the Senkaku Islands.
