Cervical cancer is being defeated thanks to two things: Pap smears and the Gardasil vaccine. HPV vaccination is so effective that many countries will have practically eliminated cervical cancer in the next two decades. Here's why🧵

Cervical cancer develops from HPV because the HP virus integrates itself into cells' DNA and then degrades proteins that keep cell growth in check, leading to precancerous growths and then cancer. This man received a Nobel Prize for that discovery:

The HPV vaccine stops this precursor to cervical cancer in its tracks. Its effects on the most common types of precancerous growths (HPV16/18—about 70% of all cervical cancers) are near-total prevention.
Image
When you look at more than just HPV16/18 cancers, the effects are still incredibly large, but a bit more modest. Most cases are still prevented.
Image
For people who are initially HPV16/18-negative the effects of vaccination on subsequent precancers from are also very sizable, and near-total.

The reason cervical cancer will stay with us for a bit longer than we might hope is because of age. The vaccine is more effective for younger people. Because of this fact, girls are being offered Gardasil at earlier and earlier ages, lowering their cancer risk accordingly.

But, surely this isn't a free lunch, right? It pretty much is. Gardasil is highly specific in its effects, and they are entirely protective. The only issues are the same things you would get with any injection—nurse mishandles a needle, patient afraid of injections, etc.

The HPV vaccine Gardasil is a modern miracle. Each year, more than half a million women develop and 300,000 women die of cervical cancer. This is unnecessary suffering. With increased uptake, cervical cancer could be nearly eliminated, with 50 million fewer cases by 2100.

For the children first exposed to the HPV vaccine (now young women) we showed that introducing the HPV vaccine in 2006 reduced cervical cancer incidence in 2022 by 48%.

Doesn’t the Y-axis unit mean that, assuming a woman lives to the age of 70 (conservative estimate), the risk of dying of cervical cancer was already less than 1 in 47,619 (less than .03 per 100,000 life-years), and now is 1 in 142,857?
I wonder if this is going to slide backwards with so many people attacking vaccines. I’ve seen a number of conservative women telling other women not to get this vaccine or give it to their daughters.
It really is a wonderful drug. I wonder if it also brings down Head and Neck cancers too, because there is a strong correlation to HPV. It would be great news if it does.
Huge public health win. The anti-vax movement is really unfortunate, but the trust the public once had in vaccines and public health authority in general is gone, and unlikely to ever come back.
Thank you for posting this. I weary of all the negative commentary about any drug produced by Pharma and yet all the herbs and supplements that have no studies done on them are miracle drugs! fantastic ! wonderful! Everybody who wants tons of clinical trials on Pharma drugs with
And yet it’s the most dangerous vaccine in history. Most cases of HPV clear up on their own with no treatment, monogamy in both partners eliminates the risk, and if you take the shot after having HPV, the harmful side effect risk grows exponentially. It’s not a good thing, and

my kids got their gardisil when they hit their teens because i’m not fucking stupid at least not all the time
10 years too late for me, sadly. Do they say anything regarding boys taking it and how that works with them? My family dr requested both my boys to take it so I agreed.

> many countries will have practically eliminated cervical cancer in the next two decades You are underestimating how effective the new anti-vax movements are, unfortunately. Many of them started to grow only after 2021.
"I’ve tried the little blue pills, the gas station miracles, even that sketchy tea from TikTok. Nothing hit like this. Tenuto Mini doesn’t just boost you — it reminds you what peak performance felt like before mortgages, back pain, and high cholesterol."
The people getting cervical cancer are still a little too old to be job vaccinated, so you are documenting a completely different effect with this first plot. Likely that cervical cancer was over-diagnosed and over-treated.
Also, I’m not against your account. There are certain issues I think you could discuss better. I was talking to Charles Murray the other day trying to discuss someone issues with him as well
#Conservatives are STILL fighting to prevent anyone from receiving this because President #Obama promoted saving American lives. Liberals are pro-life, Conservatives are literally pro-death, pro-cancer.
Hopefully RFK Jr. cleans shop on CDC and FDA. Entire US medical industry is full of quacks making money in the name of science. This is a disgrace to scientists and engineers in other fields that are actually doing good research
