this thread makes it very clear that cities should never provide free on-street parking. residents come to treat those parking spots as their birthright, and thus oppose any & all population growth within a 30 mile radius. price all the parks.

Happy Tuesday, folks! Iโ€™m spending my evening at the hottest club on the peninsulaโ€ฆthe Redwood City planning commission! Tonight, the commission is reviewing 847 Woodsid, a 74 unit 100% affordable housing project. Thereโ€™s lots of opposition to this one, so strap in! ๐Ÿงต

I know y'all don't believe in private property, but this seems like an area where requiring people to have their own private parking would completely solve the problem If it was left to the market, people would be incentivized to bike or walk, and there would be demand for trams
God, I f*cking hate you peopleโ€ฆ Move to some ultra-dense hellhole if you dislike how things are expected to work in the Western US.
Stop using government to force low density on the rest of us. If you want to live in low density, you can fuck off to a low density place, far away from the rest of us.
Why I'm for parking districts. Even if we give all existing owners a pass (huge giveaway), massive equity benefits when it permits more people to move in.
What's crazy is that we have no problem with this concept around universities where people with less means are required to pay for street permits and campus parking permits. When it comes to pricing parking for students, have at it. Pricing parking for "me?" Never.
It's a catch-22. Can't have housing density if all the land is taken up by parking lots. But you can't get rid of free parking if everyone lives too far away from the destination.

This will be the first rate cut since many high-profile YIMBY bills first started to come online in 2022โ€”I'm excited to see more projects pencil.

this is what big box stores in Manhattan look like. no parking lots in sight, just a bus lane right in front of the store and plenty of subway stops nearby

Few cities are as densely populated as Manhattan. Many Manhattan big-box stores provide parking.
