the fact that federal law prohibits EV chargers from being built at rest stops is ludicrous... sure, encourage people to drive to cute towns if they want a meal, but if they're in a bind and need a charge, shouldn't we make use of rest stops?? subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eenews

It’s protectionism for small towns along interstates. The law bans a variety of commercial activities at interstate rest stops and not EV chargers specifically.
The EV charger situation is even more ridiculous. The chargers on chargepoint network (which appear most widely available and most convenient when on road trip) are completely useless. 10+ hour charge. Only where Tesla superchargers are available is genuine charging possible.
Tesla having megapack makes deployment so much easier than others as well — you need crazy high power grid connections once you’re past a handful of stalls, unless you can use batteries to spread out peak demand.
The same people that want government to build more things also want to micromanage how government does it. Be sure you have an environmental impact statement; have all your contractors pay union wages; subcontract to minority-own firms; and don't compete with local businesses.
There are plenty of superchargers along major interstates at rest stops, this is obviously false
Probably countless idiotic laws on the books like this. This is why it’s so important to (at least make best efforts to) remove one piece of regulation for each new one enacted
It's not EV chargers. It's commercial activity. There are a few small exceptions like vending machines, tourism books/DVDs, and so on. Also, there is a grandfather clause for places that existed before 1960. So, you can find areas with food or gas stations at rest stops.
It’s not that federal law bans EV chargers, they ban most rest stop functions including gas stations and restaurants. Exceptions are only for state highways that pre-existed the Interstate, like the NJT (where you’ll notice there are gas stations and Tesla chargers).
That is crazy. But I've seen EV chargers at rest stop like things along interstates. There are superchargers at the Hookset rest stop on I93 in NH. I guess that's a privately owned rest stop.
I know for a fact there are Tesla superchargers at the Florida turnpike rest stops. can't read the full article because of the paywall. is it just actual interstate highways that have this restriction?
I mean there isn't like gas at rest stops either, tbf. Every one I've been to is just clean-ish bathrooms, some tables, and a few vending machines.
Not serious, actually! It's an unfortunate donut hole but one that's easily fixed. It would likely create a national champion in the charging business -- you could imagine EVGo, Electrify America, Tesla, and ChargePoint going to war for this contract.

It's not like they passed a law to block EV chargers. There's a law against commercial activity at rest stops. So, no restaurants, gas stations, etc. Vending machines and a few other small things are exempt. Also, establishments that already existed before 1960 are grandfathered.

Gas stations are also banned at rest stops. They’re not meant for you to hang around and have people constantly getting on and off. As long as you can’t do either it’s fine.
The new york thruway. Along Interstate 90 has service areas with gas stations, fast food, and EV chargers. I don't know if there are any at the rest areas with nothing but picnic tables and sometimes bathrooms but I doubt it.
This is a subset of rest stops so small I almost never encounter them in the northeast. All the rest stops have restaurants and gas stations. What is a "federal" test stop? That's what this pertains to. Only those.
It's a side-effect of the Federal-Aid Highway Act. Since we would be paying for that energy it would be considered "commercialized use" and is banned. I know nothing about Tesla chargers but you paid like a regular gas pump?
You would have no problem paying the bill for those that charge their car there?
Had nothing to do with EVs specifically, which didn't exist. "1956 federal law limiting commerce at most interstate rest stops to vending machines, lottery tickets, and tourism promotion."
I don’t see how that can be true - every rest stop between Maryland and Pennsylvania had EV charging the last time I drove that trip
There are chargers all over NY State Thruway rest stops and welcome centers. I don't think that interpretation is correct.
EVs have a bad habit of catching fire and not being easy to put out a gas station could take out a city block if it ignited the tanks
There are dozens, if not hundreds, of rest stops in NY, NJ with mandated EV chargers (free of charge) all over the place, with more coming. I don’t know what this article is talking about.
