And yet you leave out a full minute of context, showing that Miyazaki was disgusted by a completely different technology made to generate grotesque body horror. From 8 years ago.

Since this utter garbage is trending, we should take a look at what Hayao Miyazaki, the founder of Studio Ghibli, said about machine created art. x.com/GrantSlatton/s…

“uhhhhhh but it’s still AI” Well sure, if you completely ignore the intent, meaning, tools, context and medium, and you have no idea what you’re talking about, and you’re also completely art-illiterate, and you talk about totally different thing altogether, then it goes hard
Hayao Mayazaki from 8 years ago: "You have just served me horrible, rot-themed pancakes. And why the hell would you make rot-themed pancakes?" Anti-waffle people: "Here's a clip of Hayao Miyazaki calling all waffles rotten."
And you left the next minute of context where the guy says that his goal is "To make a robot which draws like a human" and Miya responds with "I think we are living in the end times. We are loosing faith in ourselves". If anything, you are the one proving you havent seen the doc.
i saw the doc and read the follow-up interview where he clarifies it's about Kawakami making (is his view) an insensitive portrayal of people with disabilities.

oh and in case you want to claim this is some vast moral objection to AI, here's a follow-up interview where he says it's mainly Kawakami being a dummy and using it in an insensitive way realsound.jp/tech/2018/10/p

If Studio Ghibli in fact doesn't want their work used to train AI models, do you agree that should be respected?
we'll if we're just guessing, i guess he'd call you guys terminally online for crashing out over guys making cute family photos

oh i've never seen the entire video. I totally get why he would hate ai art if this was how he was introduced to it. what were they thinking lol

Ironically, the people who are misrepresenting what Miyazaki said about technology (i.e. his disgust was about a totally different thing, not generative AI making pictures) are disrespecting him far more than the people making slop art in the style of his movies. One is x.com/menhguin/statu…

They dont respect him. If they did, they wouldn't be warping his words for political gain. If it turns out that he actually does think this way about AI art, that's fine, but it has to be by his own word.
I never understood why they would present this to, (of all people on the planet) Studio Ghibli creator Hayao Miyazaki. What did they except? lmfao.
You really think he’d react much differently to seeing his unique art style fed into an grinding blender of transformers and churned out the other end as a soulless commodity?
Wow he's actually making a nuisanced comment on the way that technology requires the artist ignore everything about how the subject might feel due to a physical disability and antiAI zealots just need desperately to have people in their corner so they can attack people for having
Yeah. Context is collapsing. Every word means a different thing in different contexts. Shared structures of meaning sharding. Language itself as something stationary,l and shared, is being sunsetted. Consensual context chaining is over. Prepare to be invaded, an nihilated AI

idk im pro ai art and im pro 3d zombie ai i would've been like this too lol but i understand that hayao is a sensitive young man (who's old now) who got repulsed at a (imo) cool tech demo wonder what he'd think about ai making ghibli like pics of your family
Image
Okay, sure but if you listen to what he says about the experience, he relates to how the animation has no connection to an experience at all. He's still disgusted with how the art is about the product and not what it's expressing.
if you want "connection to an experience" - this is the original quoted post. it's a couple sending cute family photos/memories to each other, and there's thousands like this. seems human to me, man.

🏈💥 Super Bowl 2025 had it all—touchdowns, Taylor Swift getting booed, and Trump throwing shade. 🤯💀 Swifties vs. MAGA? Kelce vs. Philly fans? This wasn't just a game—it was the most unhinged crossover episode of the year. 🍿👀 And guess what? All this chaos was brought to
I don't think it looks as bad as Miyazaki says it is. He says it reminds him of his friend who suffered. He said it's an insult to life itself. But isn't that the point of a zombie? A creature so vile, it's not even alive? So grotesque that it insults nature itself?
Super grateful for context, also, imagine being those guys super early and abandoning their dreams because it didn’t align with someone, hope they kept going
Yup. Though I'm pretty sure he'd still not like generative AI, that's a different argument. The fact that they cut out important context makes me disregard anyone who posts the video in the edited form.
Really cool you found it.

re: the clip showing Hayao Miyazaki’s disgust toward AI art creation (according to Grok): x.com/i/grok/share/o “…the X post's claim that this is a reaction to "Al art" is inaccurate, as Miyazaki was responding to a 2016 demo of Al-generated animated movements, not modern

“I am utterly disgusted… This is an insult to life itself.” Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is going viral for his reaction to seeing an AI-generated animation in 2016

Readers added context
In the 2016 clip, Miyazaki does not refer to modern AI-generated images. In the full clip, he discusses a 3D model of crawling zombies, which he considers a disrespectful portrayal of disabled people. youtube.com/watch?v=ngZ0K3…

He’s Disney and will just continue live forever through his work in this new medium… until somebody tops him. Let’s get it.
He's not condemning it because the result looks grotesque! Have you watched Ghibli films? They are masters of the weird and grotesque. He is condemning the anti-human-art ethos behind it. OpenAi and the like have the same ethos or worse.
When he says “this technology” he’s talking about A.I. not just thar specific A.I. generation. That’s why he said “who ever made this stuff has no idea what pain is” as in Artificial intelligence is emotionless & can’t express the humanity side of what art is suppose to be.
Image
And yet you conveniently cut off the most important last part where Miyazaki asks what’s their end goal, and they answer AI generation (he was NOT impressed

Yeah that's fair the full context isn't generative AI and people spread misinformation about it But like, they do mention generative Ai as their goal (he responds the same if not worse) and he absolutely hates it anyways
Except that AFTER that demonstration, he asked them what their goal was, and they said "we would like to build a machine that can draw pictures like a human" and his response was "humans are losing faith in themselves". So, additional context doesn't really change much, does it?
1) why don't you just ask the guy? 2) Sure, the artist who spends so much time in every single one of his pieces that he transforms them into something beautiful, the one that admires human will and human creativity will surely LOVE to see people using AI to avoid drawing.
