I guess Los Angeles is an unregulated Objectivist Randian hellhole because you can get a gas range installed by a Home Depot technician there

This has to be a bit, right? I know these Ayn Rand bros think deregulation is the Lord’s Prayer, but ffs safety isn't optional here. Natural gas is volatile and dangerous and therefore only licensed professionals should do the work—that should be abundantly clear. x.com/jbarro/status/…

people love inventing hypothetical safety risks from first principles instead of looking at other states. oregon is still convinced that if drivers pump their own gas they will constantly be setting themselves on fire. "does this happen anywhere else" doesn't seem to enter in.
In fairness you can't expect someone who opposed congestion pricing and whose claim to the progressive mantle was "having tattoos" to evaluate policy on stuff beyond vibes
Are people blowing up from improperly installed ovens? Like, this is an empirical question that the councilman should answer… if there’s an epidemic of poorly installed ovens, he should share the stats
Is Master even high enough? Maybe they should get a PhD in Mechanical Engineering to be safe. Do you want people to DIE?
This guy should provide his opinions on regulation of people attaching propane tanks to their gas grills (opinions on grill type aside).
LA has a massive underground economy of Mexicans that can do any type of work, from sprinklers to HVAC, appliances, handyman work, garage conversions to ADUs, etc. Any regulatory law in LA has to contend with this basic fact, which is that there is a cheaper alternative.
I once installed my own stove. Once people found out, I had to go into hiding, change my name. I'm sure the FBI are still after me.
IBEW tries to pull this all the time too in the name of “safety.” They continually push bills that would require anyone who touches a solar panel, even if just hauling it to the roof/racking, or does non-electrical work on a project to be an electrician which increases costs.
apparently doesn’t understand is that it doesn’t take a Master’s license to be qualified to work on natural gas appliances. That doesn’t mean anybody should do it. But a small %age of those competent to do it hold Master’s.
Here in Chicago, where we are so fire-scared (for understandable historical reasons) that our electrical wires have to be run through conduit, you can nevertheless also just have a Home Depot tech install your gas stove. And gas dryer.
Make no mistake, they're trying hard. Tin foil hat conspiracy isn't that they're doing this for health, they're doing this to weaken the economies of Republican lead states.

In his defense, it could take upwards of 3 to 4 minutes of watching a video to learn how to hook up to a gas line
These regulations are put in place and promulgated by people who either cant do it themselves, or need the votes of the union to get elected. The former group is a product of our education system that teaches kids nothing of practical value. The latter a casualty of democracy.
There are plenty of countries that require licensed electricians to change an outlet. It's nuts. YouTube has videos on how to do it without even turning off the circuit!
One quarter psi. Pretty low pressure. I installed a connector for an outdoor gas grill. Very easy and easy to check for leaks with a leak detecting solution, not to mention the presence of ethyl mercaptan in natural gas.
I think the more relevant point is that LA has not had a string of fatal explosions in buildings, which traced to poor installation of gas appliances, such as NYC has suffered in recent years. (See, e.g., Bronx 2023 explosion.) Not touching the question of LA's hellhole status.
If individual homeowners want to do DIY gas stove installation - fine. Not so much in NYC apartment building.
toasters are dangerous too, especially with metal silverware so commonly present in kitchens. If he's consistent he might think licenses ought to be required for making toast as well.
JFC, it's not a hydrogen stove. This guy should have a beer & take a deep breath. Gas fittings aren't hard.
I just think they don't know the first things about the actual topic of gas connections and assume it's just a fireball waiting to happen.
They want to take away Nat gas from New Yorkers . They will make up any nonsense like “ITS DANGEROUS!” to do so
he should see what these pros do with the gas while their installing it. they light it under your house for heat and light. they'll have a copper line and an open flame coming out of it. it isn't "dangerous" in a ventilated place. have these people never seen Myth Busters?
This reminds me of when they periodically try to pass a law in NJ saying you can pump your own gas in NJ and the doomer chorus is like "IT'S DANGEROUS! WOMEN COULD GET ASSAULTED! WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS???" only to have people point out its legal in 49 other states.
Oh, so you think amateurs should be able to use gas-powered stoves and grills without a licensed professional supervising? I guess you just don't care if kids die, which I assume is constantly happening all over the country
