When I was in high school I thought the Internet would lead to the golden age of democracy as citizens would be able to dialogue out all the problems and come up with better solutions together. So wrong!
It’s fun when you’re young and still developing your own ideas. Helps you flesh out what you truly believe vs what you thought you did. It’s tiresome when you’re older and just trying to live your life.
The discourse here isn't striving for Buckley/Vidal or Lincoln/Douglas. Xitter is where your nuanced and well-informed argument is deliberately misconstrued by someone who is desperate to dunk on a word you used in the first sentence.
yeah we wern't prepared for how dumb people could be, even smart people can be incredibly dumb when it's outside their area of expertise, and the worst takes are on things people think are obvious but actually aren't
The discussions about philosophy, politics, and economics On Here seem quite good overall. The engagement farming, purity affirming slop ... maybe not so good. Another argument for tiered social media accounts (free, paid, premium): less slop to wade through!
That's because argument is a very unsatisfying form of discourse. Rather than trying to disprove what someone says, it's far more interesting to ask him to explain it. (Interestingly, if you do this, he'll quite often decide for himself that he wasn't quite right).
Most people are deeply stupid. That's the most important mental model to understand which young smart people are often too naive to truly grasp. You don't want a bunch of idiots egging each other on, falling for flattering, pandering, self-aggrandizing,
that should only ever be left to the intellectuals of society. when normies do it it just ruins it.
You incorrectly assumed that they'd know the stuff they are intensely arguing about :) Instead, welcome to Arkham.
I think a broad fact based debate like you wanted would still be great! It's just now so much of the discourse is based on emotion rather than reason and the rational discussions just don't happen very often
When I was in high school, I dreamed of a world where I got to shoot a lot of dudes and pleasure a lot of chicks. Mercifully, my life has been less strenuous.
It’s because of capitalist exploitation that your vision hasn’t been realized, Marx proved that under communism we all could “hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner”. Literally proven in Kapital, Volume 1.
It is a lot more appealing future when everyone you know is smart, young and full of promise. Also, helps to be sitting in a cafe/bar with some alcohol in the mix and the promise of good sex later.
Arguing is never productive. It is when we find commonality that we make progress. An immature HS student would not understand that...well some immature adults do not understand that either.

We haven't solved inner alignment, we haven't solved outer alignment, and we haven't even solved outer outer alignment (how to even come up with dreams for a future that don't go horribly wrong when taken to their logical extreme)
