It is hard to get your head around how stupendously large an electricity user a 2-5 gigawatt data center represents. A 5 gigawatt data center consumes on the order of 40 million megawatt-hours of electricity per year, as much electricity as the ENTIRE STATE of Nevada or Kansas!

"We project that 2GW and 5GW data centers will be needed to develop single advanced AI models for Anthropic in 2027 and 2028, respectively. With several other U.S. companies developing frontier AI models, we expect total frontier AI training demands in America to reach 20-25GW in x.com/AnthropicAI/st…

Yes! I'd love a dashboard that tracks bio vs. human vs. AI energy consumption.

Anthropogenic mass just passed biomass. But human energy flux is still 5x less than bio.

Hard for me to see how Canada doesn’t end up as the default North American site for these in the same way they are the default site for aluminum smelting and other high energy cost industry. They get half their power from hydro and have massive conventional reserves.
Can we talk about the water usage a data center uses? Seriously. They want to build one in, wait for it… Arizona. And yeah, we have golf courses but they use reclaimed water. These data centers use fresh. We have fabulous ground water. I’m not giving it up.
would be o.k. if there were climate awareness, binding emission reduction targets and ideally a cap system. then rising electricity prices would keep power use by data centers at bay.
Best part is these centers will negotiate discounted power rates forcing rate increases on individuals
to be fair, nevada and kansas are not real states according to those who think the electoral college is raycist. we can ignore this data point.
Why does Texas use so much more than California even though it has fewer residents? More industrial use? Electric fracking?
Mind-blowing! 5GW centers using state-sized energy shows why AI needs robust plans. Embrace UAE's strategy! Nuclear energy's pivotal in meeting demands sustainably.
