Interesting perspective here from Grok, courtesy of . I've asked Waymo about this several times over the last year and they did not mention it, but it wouldn't surprise me if this were true.

The Hyundai option would obviously be the best for them but I doubt they'll achieve large-scale production before 2027. They only announced the partnership a year ago and just started testing them publicly a couple of weeks ago.

The problem is they may see a backlash for putting Chinese cars on the road in the US even if all of the electronics are from Waymo.
I really just think Sundar has gotta figure out a way to pay Trump personally and emphasize that he will be unlocking a massive public good that will allow him to brag about saving tens of thousands of lives (Nobel Peace Prize?) and Trump will give a full tariff exemption.
My NZ MBA professor told the story of the entrepreneur who flew to Japan to ask to buy all the parts of a TV so he could set up a tariff avoiding assembly plant in NZ. Sony said not possible. He then offered to pay them to disassemble completed TVs. NZ TVs were VERY expensive.
