I love Amazon so much but my guy’s last two tweets were kissing up to Donald Trump and he’s also giving millions of dollars to bizarre leftist groups … there is a happy medium to be found.

Like to be clear, Green Latinos isn’t just planting some trees — it’s a cog in the machine of leftist groups that helped kill a permitting reform deal and tried to prevent Democrats from addressing asylum chaos.

But I see this all the time — rich guys (great) with moderate political views (also great) looking to put a little money into some progressive causes (fantastic) but then doing so in a way that props up lunatics and bad actors rather than building a strong center-left.
i’m for community tree equity but can we call it something else like how about “planting more trees in poor neighborhoods that lack shade”
If any of those groups take off and get real influence, they all owe Jeff Bezos something. Philanthropic equivalent of diversification or hedging.
“I love Amazon so much.” Ok I feel called out. But “philanthropy” for most people is just getting a tax break. The most well known philanthropists used philanthropy for bolster their public image, but not everyone cares about that.
This is pretty important dude. Ignoring the phrasing, trees help mitigate the health effects of heat waves and historically nonwhite areas have fewer trees (per a lot of studies). It's a pretty easy intervention to reduce deaths & adverse health events.
sorry, this is bad because why?? you can want to build more stuff while also thinking that we should have trees and parks.
I make no claims about these cases, but in general, prospective donors should ask "is this going to get work done or just fund somebody's lifestyle?"
The tree thing is actually really important in arid sunbelt cities, tbh, for preventing the further development of urban heat bubbles and local climate disruption. This is a big deal esp in places like Phoenix where even minor increase in shade makes huge difference
He doesn't care where the money goes it's just virtue signalling. Similar Gates fighting malaria in Africa & at the same time helping CCP in China build its great Firewall
I mean, of all the awful racist charities out there, planting some trees in the hood is not the worst one I've seen. (assuming equity in this case doesn't mean razing parks in the nice parts of town)
Most foundation grant-making is just checking boxes. Pretty much any nonprofit that can figure out the grant application process will get plenty of awards, even big ones like this. Jeff Bezos is not evaluating grant applications. Some staffer is doing that.
I don't understand are you pocket watching his charities? Why would you care has nothing to do with you? Or anyone else.
More green spaces and trees in poorer communities would be a good thing Not endorsing everything these groups are calling for, of course
What is wrong with this? Green spaces /trees are delivered as a public good, they can be quite significant to the well-being of people living in cities. It's reasonable to ask if they are being distributed fairly.
Planting trees in low income neighborhoods is really good. This is the kind of leftist extremism that the country needs. Fund it.
Not sure where this tree equity charity is doing it’s work but would be nice if they did some out reach in my neighborhood.
You are upset a billionaire is giving money to plant trees?! Like I hate billionaires but what is the angle here? Are you rallying against big arbor?
Ditto with George Soros, he's clearly not looking into what his son is funding, because some of it is decidedly not good for liberal democracy.
This seems like one of the more benign applications of equity obsession? one of the shittier parts about poorer, more diverse urban neighborhoods is how gray and bleak they are
7 million dollars from him is like you or I giving a quarter to the guy outside the coffee shop, I wouldn’t obsess over it

Neither of these are bad, despite their virtue signaling, academic, and click-bait titles.
These are literally goals of many urban forester associations get over yourself snowflake
Isn't it a good thing to ensure Green spaces are distributed relatively equally in a large metropolitan area? Seems reasonable to me.
Hey, dickhead, are you suggesting that Jeff Bezos should be AGAINST planting more trees in minority neighborhoods to provide more shade and green spaces? Is he really that big of an oligarchic asshole?
