If not for the Brenden Eich and James Damore cases and not for Lina Khan's FTC I think the tech swing right never happens. (the crypto people maybe. I think the crypto people think they got treated poorly because of Warrenites and really it's because of SBF.)

I also want to say - I don't know anyone who got the Eich and Damore cases right because they correctly anticipated the left would provoke a destructive backlash. Everyone I know who got them right did it through a principled commitment to old-fashioned liberalism.
There is a consequentialist case for not overreaching yourself. But people are pretty bad at calculating this stuff. In practice, the advice I'd give someone isn't 'carefully calculate what will trigger backlash'. It's -
